I'm starting a fintech and payments podcast.

The goal is interesting discussions rather than high production quality. Remote recording (self produced).

Looking to talk with those building interesting stuff and get across product, tech, business, and strategy.

Please no PR pitches but open to any recommendations or direct outreach.

I was watching Sky News with my wife earlier. Pete Hegseth was talking. My wife said "is that the real estate guy?" 🥹

Stripe’s Link wallet is fast becoming the de facto payment option for many personal agent experiences — and interestingly they offer a degree of purchase protection. (US only for now.)

The terms of the Purchase Protection were recently updated and essentially works like a er than as a payment scheme chargeback.

Cover is provided by New Hampshire Insurance Company and Cover Genius with Stripe providing the service as “a convenience and benefit”, in other words it’s not a legal, or scheme obligation, and could be withdrawn in the future.

Any claims are administered by Cover Genius and not Stripe. This is a different model to what most people are used to with purchase protection, in which queries usually go via a card issuer.

As agentic commerce grows in importance will we see third party insurance models grow in popularity? It makes sense given many of the rules around liability are not always 100% clear, and traditional routes such as chargebacks are still adapting.

Also noting again that this is US only for now. The US market has much higher interchange than the UK and EU, therefore some of the transaction revenue could essentially be used to pay for an insurance model of protection — this will be much harder in the UK and EU.

Everything is competing for the same set amount of eyeball time every day 👀
Americans' media consumption has topped out at ~25 hours a week

Annual growth since 2018:
- YouTube: +7.8%
- Social media: +6.6%
- Gaming: +2.1%
- Video (non-YouTube): -0.7%
- Print: -10.5%

Every hour social and YouTube gain is an hour something else loses

So let’s get this right: the most elite British troops, SAS commandos operating against terrorists, can be placed under criminal investigation for missions undertaken at the behest of their government and for the safety of their country; but actual, known ISIS terrorists can’t be deported from the UK because of their ‘human rights’?

We are literally prosecuting our most elite commandos while protecting known terrorists. It’s terrorists’ rights over British citizens’ rights.

For shame.
EXCLUSIVE: The commanding officer of the SAS was placed under criminal investigation and referred to prosecutors over anti-ISIS mission in Syria.

Unprecedented move concerned police request for classified evidence, but effort to charge him collapsed thetimes.com/uk/defence/art…

This is what rent control does. When it’s illegal to ration by price, you start rationing by any other means you can.
A friend of mine had to do a 15 minute interview about his job, income, previous rental history, etc, in order to *view* a flat. Luckily for him, he has a well-paid job, has lived in England all his life, and an impeccable rental history. I feel bad for people who don't.

I’ve read so few books this year as I spent any free time on Claude Code instead but for what end purpose? 😂

I went to the ballet but left during the first interval as I got so hungry but London is terrible for late night eating so I had to make do with a Chipotle 😢

So it was never about NATO 🤔
Russian President Vladimir Putin cited genetics to declare that Russians and Ukrainians are “one people” and reiterated his claim to Ukrainian territory, saying: “I think that it is not their territory but the historical territory of Russia.” wapo.st/48aZaZF

Why did Claude Code move scheduled tasks into a space where they are invisible to me unless I navigate with a few extra clicks and menus?

The reality is Netflix just isn’t very good

The algorithm means Netflix tries to push the same stuff and relies on the same formats for years at a time

It had innovative shows some years back but these days I often find nothing worth watching

Go back five years and Netflix seemed h stoppable — bug vibe shift
People are losing the attention span to even watch 30 minute TV shows as short form video eats the world.

This year I stopped my @TheEconomist subscription after 20 years

@WorksInProgMag is replacing it for my in terms of reading time

The format of a weekly newspaper is tough to pull off in a world where news moves so quickly — a world of Substack, notifications pinging and daily updates

It wouldn’t surprise me if The Economist eventually moves to more long form reports and content and less news over time
Mike joining Works in Progress is a huge moment for us and marks the start of the next phase in our project.

He is one of the most insightful, interesting and enjoyable to read writers anywhere, and his book, The Land Trap, is fantastic and one of the most "Works in Progress" non-fiction books written in years. He is the perfect person to help us produce model-based analysis of business, economics and finance, and great original reporting on everything from robotics and drones to the state of America's cities.

Most of all I am excited about working with (another!) one of my best friends. I first met Mike when he was a student and declared afterwards that he was so impressive that I would buy stock in him if I could. It's taken 14 years, but this is one step better. Works in Progress has become harder work as it has grown, but it's amazingly fun and rewarding as well, not least because I get to do it with some of my favourite people in the world.

As Mike says, we've seen incredible growth in our first year in print and we have extremely high hopes for 2027. Above all we have to make everything we do as excellent as it possibly can be. We're looking for journalists and other writers who are doing truly excellent work to join our team, so if that's you, watch this space.
