🚨🚨Baylor has parted ways with head football coach Dave Aranda after seven seasons; @PeteThamel first reported the news.

The firing follows Baylor’s ugly back-to-back losses to Kansas and TCU, neither of which had beaten a Power Four opponent going into the matchup.

Joe Torre will be at Game 1 of the #WorldSeries tonight, just like he was in 1957 and ‘58 when he was there to watch his brother Frank play for the Milwaukee Braves.

Always a great trip down memory lane with the Hall of Famer.

Larry Dierker was a teen-ager when Colt Stadium opened, and in his debut there the future Astros broadcaster & manager struck out Willie Mays.

That was 1962. It’s also the place where Nolan Ryan and his future wife, Ruth, had their second date.

Thanks especially to Mike Vance for voted effort required for a historical marker to become reality.

It was simply wonderful to be in the company of Fountain of Youth case study Tal Smith, front office fixture of the century.

It was profoundly special as well to stand side by side and present back to back with Mason Hunt, the great grandson of R.E. Bob Smith, the centerpiece to the puzzle of Houston becoming a Major League city.

George Kirksey and Craig Cullinan started it. Bob was the seeds, land, water and sunlight. Bob and my grandfather, Roy Hofheinz, had an established, undeniable history of success in collaboration.

Together, they would fly H-Town toward the Heavens, assisted vitally and mightily by Civil Rights swamp-blazers Quentin Meese snd Eldrewey Stearns.

Colt Stadium stood for teamwork, perseverance and our neck of the woods’ need for innovation. Wonder was born, and our stakes were raised.

Thankful for the legacy of Jim Pendleton, the storytelling stewardship of Mike Acosta, the Divine energy and depth of Bishop James Dixon, plus the welcoming support of Reliant Park representatives.

The crowd had historic tailgate vibes all the way. I just tried to live up to my jacket and know my grandparents were watching.

To the Texans, the Rodeo, the Astros, the Rockets, Coogs, Owls, musicians, Circus acts, champions, Hall of Famers, esteemed leaders, guests and most if all, the taxpayers of Harris County, you’ve all had halos and hands in taking us from a temporary baseball stadium to world renowned status.

Here’s to all the giant leaps.

Go, Houston, always!

A piece of Houston baseball history is officially marked forever.

Yesterday, a Texas Historical Marker was unveiled at Reliant Park honoring Colt Stadium, the original home of Houston's Major League Baseball franchise, the Houston Colt .45s. Congrats to SABER for making this happen!

Today, hundreds attended the celebration of life for Bill Giles, former Phillies owner, executive and phive-tool MLB lifer. Bill lost his mother when he was 7, served our country, gave the Astrodome its “Eighth Wonder of the World” label and was praised beautifully this morning by Mike Schmidt, Jayson Stark, family and friends. It was a lot of happily ever laughter for one of the great promoters Baseball has ever known. He is a two-time world champion in Philly and was an MVP to my grandfather in Houston before, during and after the Dome’s debut. Bill had his window on this planet and knocked the ball to infinity. After the congregation sang “Take Me Out To The Ball Game” to conclude the funeral, I could only imagine the soulful embrace a son and mother had in Heaven the moment he touched home. Peace be with you, Bill, and with all of those blessed by your grateful journey.
