Two critical vulnerabilities have been discovered in PHP, potentially putting millions of websites at risk.🚨

The flaws, dubbed “PHP2Shell” (CVE-2026-109618 and CVE-2026-109619), could allow unauthenticated attackers to remotely execute malicious code on vulnerable web servers.
ularly concerning is that the vulnerabilities exist in PHP itself, not in applications like WordPress or Laravel. Even fully updated websites could be vulnerable if the underlying PHP runtime is unpatched.

The PHP security team released emergency fixes on October 21, 2026, for PHP 8.2, 8.3, 8.4, and 8.5.

Older versions, including PHP 7.4, are still dependent on vendor backports or migration to supported releases.

If you’re running PHP on a publicly accessible server, now is a good time to check for security updates.

Why don't we get a blockbuster film about Lepanto? It's a story about a king's bastard half-brother with zero naval experience. He has to put together a ramshackle alliance, and then a rag-tag fleet to defeat the biggest, most experienced, and most powerful navy of the day. longest Hail Marys in history. It's almost impossible to simulate in a wargame, because the Turks always win unless you instigate specific rules for the Christians to cheat their way to victory.

In a film version, you also get to have the character of Cervantes and a heartwarming bit when thousands of Christian slaves are freed at the end. It's amazing. I suppose it would be super-expensive with all the ships, but I'd assume decent and appropriate use of CGI. Until then I guess we'll only have G. K. Chesterton's poem Lepanto, which I recommend highly.

Linus Torvalds recently wrote about using AI to clean up old Linux code.

He wrote in a Git message that some code was “too obscure” so he “did what I preach: use modern LLM tools to help make sense of it all.”

Found bugs going back to 2013 and fixed them.
