Great pleasure to host @ProfJohnARogers @i3S_UPorto for a an exciting seminar showcasing advanced #sensing technology for #health #monitoring! Looking forward for exploiting its applications in #bioengineering @MOBILIsE_EU!
Thanks to Dr. Helena Azevedo -- Molecular Biomaterials Group leader at @i3S_UPorto - Instituto de Investigação e Inovação em Saúde (Institute for Research and Innovation in Health), Portugal's largest research institute focused on health and life sciences, as a consortium of the e founding institutes – for hosting a productive visit yesterday to the main laboratory facilities in Porto. Interesting discussions around the advanced biomaterials systems under development here and their potential integration with our bioelectronics systems to enable enhanced and differentiated function. I gave a wide-ranging talk – their MOBILIsE Seminar -- on our various device platforms, in a presentation titled ‘Wireless Bioelectronic Implants for Monitoring and Modulating Organ Function.’  Although mostly on implants, I began by featuring our ‘epidermal’ electronic and microfluidic systems. Several promising collaborations emerged from the interactions yesterday – including vibrant meetings with faculty, students and postdocs, especially Dr. Rui Pereira, Prof. Inês Gonçalves, Prof. Ana Paula Pego and the Director of the institute Prof Claudio Sunkel. (As a side comment: I may not have experienced a representative sampling, but I have never seen such a high fraction -- easily a super majority, and beyond -- of women scientists at a research institute as I did yesterday at i3S!) Thanks also for a dinner and walk around the beautiful city center to cap off the day! The architecture, especially the azulejos on buildings, churches and across the interior of the main train station (Sao Bento) is striking…Besides the beautiful Riberia District, the Clerigos Tower and other landmarks, I am told that the McDonald’s in the city center is the ‘fanciest’ in the world, built at the site of a centuries-old cafe – although the food is apparently no different...

🌡️ #NewReport: the June 2025 Western European heatwave was up to +2.5°C hotter & drier than similar past events — mainly due to human-driven climate change. It’s not rare anymore. It’s our climate. 📎 Read the report 👉 climameter.org/20250620-22-we…
