Calling myself a dumbass: humble, self-effacing, almost Socratic

Calling someone else a dumbass: devastating critique, owned forever, brain mogged

Oh.... I always thought it meant an Asian person from the Bay Area. I had no idea it had to do with... what did you call it? Statistics?

this is the middle of the bell curve on whether project Hail Mary is enjoyable
Project Hail Mary is all written exactly like this. It is mortifying.

JUST IN: Sweden's government bans ChatGPT & Claude from staff computers, making Microsoft Copilot its only approved AI tool.

I vividly remember being a student and being shocked at a math professor undecided whether the set N includes zero or not. I had a strong opinion about it but I don’t remember which one. Now when I teach I have the same indecision 😅

yeah essentially the birthday of my youngest child is a hard stop for any “do you want a do-over?” hypotheticals
Occasionally a question goes viral like “Would you go back in time and start over at age ten?” And I think, of course. I’d have time. My parents would be not just alive, but young. I could reverse my mistakes and make things right. Unless you’re in love or have kids, what do you have to lose that’s worth more than that?

TBF Lean’s rise had little to do with dependent types. Rather, its pleasant UX turned a few mathematicians into enthusiasts who built a library of mostly… classical math, which in turn spurred unprecedented adoption by stars like Terence Tao.
> “Types are a bad way to formalize mathematics”
> Dependent types (Lean) currently being used to push the frontier of math

make it make sense??

At some point there's a bunch of shit like longform writing that you can't just do in a single in-class session, and the ability to do university education at scale has been largely predicated on an honor system, and the economics of this has meaningfully changed
If Pangram truly is as perfect as its academic defenders say it is, faculty could go back to offering out-of-class assignments, papers and take-home exams. But would you feel comfortable failing a student based on an AI's probabilistic judgment?

Smart white boys surpass their teachers in intelligence by fourth or fifth grade. Remember public elementary school teachers have IQs around 100-105 based on SAT scores. These women know it and they hate it. They like compliance. They grade based on compliance.
This is what teachers think about your white sons if you have them in public schools

Yes, I feel comfortable trusting Pangram to confirm my own intuitions. Here are the real problems:
(1) Catching students cheating creates a bureaucratic nightmare for professors.
(2) Catching students cheating is not the same as successfully teaching them.

Not gonna dunk. Neil is a sincere guy with a good heart. But we must continually re-explain where things stand on immigration because it will take another two presidential terms to cement new norms. 1/n
Why are we even debating whether a man of good character with an American wife and American kids "belongs" in America?

Of course he does.

If the law doesn't welcome that, it's a bad law and it should be changed.

what are we even doing here lol

Post singularity the whales are one of the first species we should uplift. Dogs first because of our ancient alliance, but whales are in the top 5
the reason moby-dick remains such a vital piece of human art is that it addresses what is probably one of humanity's greatest collective atrocities, the genocide of the whales, with an ambivalence it cannot itself fully articulate. melville is distraught, but he can't explain why

"you’re not a good parent if you haven’t performed a little nepotism" shit ya know when you put it like that
Sylvester Stallone says that having his daughter in a major role in ‘TULSA KING’ Season 4 is absolutely nepotism.

“First they go, ‘Nepotism is terrible. I said, ‘Oh please, you’re not a good parent if you haven’t performed a little nepotism.' Then obviously you don’t care about come first.

Of course it’s nepotism, you idiot. That’s why we’re parents. We want the best for our children. So obviously, we let them have every advantage.”

I was in food service as a summer job . Suddenly i went from 40+ hours a week to 30 hours.
I was working retail when Obamacare started. It mandated every large company would have to pay for health insurance for its full time workers. So I got my hours cut, and was told I could never work over time and didn’t get health insurance.

I’m at Disneyland and just heard a woman complain, “There’s too many kids around!”

Perfect example of how time can change perspective on a movie. Revenge of the Sith is 100/100 and the best in the series. The Empire Strikes Back is not better, and it's not even close. The strength of that final act also boosts the value of Episodes I and II.
