Super excited that my new book The Pantheon is out on Thursday!
I rank the 50 best players to play Test cricket since 1877.
In a series of comparative essays, I assess which titans are better and why. Lara or Sachin? Who is the best West Indies quick? And who is the Test MVP?

Data centres aren’t pretty but if America stops building them, AI development doesn’t stop. It is merely exported to China along with military, cyber and tech supremacy. Column for @nypost

RIP Patrick Stewart. What an actor. I still can’t believe he agreed to do this scene. And he didn’t even mind when I ruined every take. Legend.

Mindblowing chart from OBR. In 2029 real household disposable income per person expected to be just 1% higher than in 2019. What an unbelievably awful decade. It used to grow by 2%+ every year, not 1% in 10 years.

I played the whole speech to my son last night. Absolute class act.
Harry Kane’s words to his family, One of the most beautiful #BallonDor speeches ever: 🤍
All those years, the sacrifice, taking me to training, coming to watch me play all around England... There was never any pressure to become a footballer. It was always about working hard. x.com/Mohamme9073346…

In The Times welfare project, a few findings - when they emerged - took my breath away.
This graph showing surge in Britain’s “deaths of despair” (due to drugs, suicide, alcohol) is one.
Plunging in Europe. Soaring here. Why?

Superb from @FraserNelson and the @thetimes team investigating a grotesquely failing welfare system

Livestreaming an execution is not just repugnant but foolish. It hands jihadism all the publicity it craves.
The word martyr means "witness". An Isis manual said “The media is more potent than bombs.”
Hegseth is a wannabe Rambo who is out of control

My view is that Brexit was a somewhat costly mistake (and I opposed it at the time as well) but I am unsettled when I speak to "elites" in Britain who are totally fixated on it as the source of our problems, and reversing/undoing it as the solution.
I've had more than one experience over the past few weeks that has given me the impression that many people who run the country or influence those who do believe that Brexit is the silver bullet. I think that's totally wrong – the country's inability to build housing, infrastructure, or cheap energy supply, along with the country's now very high levels of tax and govt spending, are much bigger problems for growth.
If anything, AI may mean being outside the EU ends up being quite a good thing, despite the costs so far. Avoiding the EU's AI and data regulations is valuable, and these will probably only get worse. And Britain now has a greater possibility of getting inside the American "tent" and get preferential access to frontier models that most countries cannot get, if that ends up being important.

We haven't had neoliberalism for decades. Instead we have a system where central banks suppress risk, governments rescue failure and taxpayers absorb losses.
Gains are privatised; risks are socailised.
This isn't capitalism; it's the opposite.
