Everyone worries that doctors will trust AI too much. A study published yesterday in The Lancet Digital Health found that the bigger problem is the opposite.
A team led by the psychologist Susanne Gaube of University College London asked 50 radiologists and 75 other physicians and medical trainees to read head CT scans and decide whether there was bleeding in the brain. Each of them read one set of 50 scans alone, another with a plain AI verdict, and a third with an AI verdict that also marked where it saw the bleed. The twist: one in five AI answers was deliberately wrong.
Both mistakes happened. Some doctors followed the machine when it was wrong. But more damage came from doctors who ignored it when it was right, usually on the cases where they felt least sure. When the AI showed its evidence on the image, the odds of a correct diagnosis were 84% higher than reading alone. On the hardest bleeds, the non-radiologists with that marked-up AI even did better than the radiologists who had it too.
Explanations did not fully protect anyone from bad advice, so this is no argument for blind trust. It is an argument against a lazy idea of safety. At Certuma we are building autonomous AI medicine, and I don't believe the answer is a human second-guessing every correct call. A tired doctor overruling a right answer is not a safety net. It is a new source of error. What works is AI that shows its evidence and knows when it is unsure, with doctors focused on exactly those cases.
A human in the loop only helps if that human knows when to listen.

"¿Varsavsky?"

Cancer vaccines
It is now widely believed that cancer is not as rare as clinical statistics once suggested. Mutations that can start a tumor arise frequently throughout life, yet most of these early abnormal cells are successfully recognized and eliminated by the immune system before they ever become detectable. What we diagnose and treat as cancer is, in large part, the subset of cases in which that surveillance fails: the mutated cells manage to hide, suppress local immunity, or simply outpace the response, allowing a tumor to grow.
This view helps explain why people whose immune systems are severely weakened, such as those with advanced untreated HIV, develop certain cancers at far higher rates. It also supplies the logic for a new kind of vaccine. Cancer vaccines.
Unlike traditional vaccines that prevent infection in healthy people, cancer vaccines are given after a tumor has already formed, usually after surgery. They present the abnormal proteins created by the cancer’s mutations so that T cells can be retrained to recognize and clear the remaining cells the immune system had previously failed to control. In this sense the vaccines are an attempt to restore the protection that normally keeps most nascent cancers in check.

The vaccine for melanoma, described by experts as a “game-changer” cuts the risk of patients dying or cancer returning by 42 per cent, trials have found.
Intismeran, produced by Moderna, is custom-built for patients who have had a melanoma removed, using a sample of the growth. th AI to create the vaccine ⤵️

Estoy pensando agregarlo a mi dieta.

Macron has had nine years to stop this. Le Pen will need a few weeks by sending a much tougher message to criminals disguised as protesters.
Last Saturday rioters burned the town hall of Limoges, a 19th century building in the middle of France, until the roof caved in. Police eople in one day. More than 3,000 shops were smashed or looted in Paris, Lyon, Marseille and dozens of other cities. More than 500 police officers were injured.
These are the criminals, the looters and the alliance of Islamists and leftists who want to destroy France. The looters move in gangs of 50 to 200, called up on social media, and empty a store in minutes.
Macron's interior minister, Laurent Nuñez, admitted the police "lost control" of France's biggest cities and offered to resign. Macron kept him which is another sign of failure. That is Macron's France: a country that can't protect its own town halls.
My wife @ninavars and I know these gangs firsthand. At the 2022 Champions League final, Liverpool against Real Madrid, my wife, our two little boys and I were mugged outside the Stade de France in Saint-Denis. There were thousands of them, Africans and French of African descent, and not one of them was white. It was a racist attack of black on white, those that when I used to be progressive didn’t know could actually occur. The police were completely overwhelmed. They mocked our boys for being white and threatened them, and with my wife and children under attack they stole 6,000 euros worth of tickets from us and run away with their booty. Macron's interior minister at the time, Gérald Darmanin, blamed the chaos on Liverpool fans with fake tickets. The French Senate later found the fans had been blamed to cover up the failures of the organizers. Darmanin is now Macron's justice minister. That night made me anti mass migration from countries incompatible with Western culture.
Macron's answer this time was curfews, speeches and soldiers sent to stand guard in front of buildings, a full week after Limoges burned. Four days after the riots only 149 people were still in custody. Everyone else is back on the street.
Le Pen would do the opposite.

For the first time, a cancer medicine designed for one single patient has worked in a large phase three trial.
This week at ESMO, the big European oncology congress, Merck and Moderna presented INTerpath-001. They enrolled 1,137 people whose high-risk melanoma had already been removed by surgery. All of them got Keytruda, the standard immunotherapy, and two out of three also got intismeran, an mRNA shot built from their own tumor.
How do you make a medicine for one person? You sequence the tumor and a blood sample, software picks up to 34 mutations that only that cancer has, and those are written into an mRNA molecule that teaches the immune system what to hunt. A different drug for every patient, and they managed to manufacture it for more than 99% of the patients who were meant to receive it.
The result: after two years, 82.2% of patients on the combination were still free of cancer, versus 70% on Keytruda alone. The risk of recurrence or death fell 42%, and 58% once the six-month immunization was complete. Survival data are not mature yet, and this is only melanoma, but there are already three phase three trials in lung cancer.
The oncologist Georgina Long, principal investigator of the trial at Melanoma Institute Australia, put it well: "For decades, cancer treatment has largely been defined by where a tumor originates in the body."
That era is ending. Medicine is moving from treating the average patient to treating you.

Vota PP, vota Vox.
