As we wind up #World_AMR_Awareness_Week 2025, kindly note that combating #AMR requires everyone. Understanding local community perspectives on antimicrobial use in different context is critical. This was evident during discussions at Uganda's 10th AMR conference, 19-21 Nov.

8/10 | Why It Matters 🌍
Fake medicines don’t just fail to cure — they drive #AMR, cause preventable deaths, and waste household income.
Every counterfeit pill weakens our fight against infections in humans and animals.

7/10 | Information Gaps 📻📺
Only 42% recalled hearing any campaign on SFMs in the last 6 months — mostly on radio (61%) or TV (49%).
🐾 Few focused on animal health.
This calls for broader, #OneHealth-focused community engagement!

🔹 14% had bought suspected fake medicines for human use
🔹 24% had done so for animals
🔹 Only 4% ever reported suspicions to @UNDAuthority
Trustworthy pharmacies & health workers were key safeguards — but reporting remains low.

Encouragingly:
💊 96% agreed SFMs are dangerous for humans
🐄 95% said the same for animals
But many believed genuine medicines are “too expensive” — pushing communities toward unsafe alternatives.

4/10 | What People Know 🤔
✅ 83% had heard about SFMs
⚠️ But only 31% could correctly define them
❌ Just 7% accurately identified a falsified medicine
🚫 76% didn’t know how to report them
Awareness ≠ understanding.

Substandard & falsified medicines threaten lives, fuel #AntimicrobialResistance, and undermine trust in health systems.
In Africa, 1 in 10 medical products is fake or poor-quality. Uganda isn’t spared.
