In the tweet below, my friend Abubaker, a sports journalist from Gaza, shares details about the first football tournament held after three years of genocide, the “1000 Martyrs Cup.”

In Gaza, "The 1000 Martyrs" Tournament, which resumed football after three years of genocide, has seen exhilarating and dramatic moments so far:
Khadamat Rafah and Shabab Rafah, the reigning Premier League champions and runners-up, were knocked out of the group stage.
lya's Mohammed Al-Tramsi, whom I spoke to for Drop Site News this September, sent his team to the knockout stages after snatching a goal in the last game of the group stage. But his side suffered a thrashing 3-0 defeat in the quarter-finals as Gaza Sports Club cruised through to the semi-finals of Gaza City and the north.
Al-Tramsi was banned for six consecutive games in a disciplinary action over misconduct in previous matches.
Simultaneously, in a poorly officiated heavyweight encounter, a chipped goal secured Khadamat Al-Nusairat's spot in the semi-finals of central and southern Gaza over hosts Ittihad Deir al-Balah whose players hit the woodwork thrice and fell short by the narrowest of margins. The game resulted in huge fury and offences which led to the suspension of Ittihad Deir al-Balah's assistant coach for a full calendar year from sports activities.
Khadamat Al-Nusairat will go toe-to-toe today with the dark horse Al-Istiqlal, the Rafah-based second-tier club which pulled off a dominating five-star performance against Al-Tarabut in the group stage and a clutch 2-1 win VS Khadamat Al-Maghazi to reach the semi-finals.
Mahmoud Abu-Aiada of Al-Istiqlal leads the race to the top goalscorer with eight goals ahead of today's semi-finals.
The games revolved around commemorations of clubs footballers killed by the Israeli military during the genocide, including Gaza's first centurion of goals and the Palestinian Pele Suliman Al-Obeid whose lifelong side will face the historic Beit Hanoun Sports Club today in the semis at the Palestine 5-a-side artificial turf playground.
Out of the eight teams left, only Al-Zwayada Youth Club was spared from Israeli bombardment. However, at least their number 9 & goalscorer and two other players were killed in Israeli attacks on Gaza.
The four clubs in Gaza and the north alongside Al-Istiqlal in Rafah were wiped out. Khadamat Al-Buraij and Khadamat Al-Nusairat were destroyed/damaged. Additionally, Khadamat Al-Nusairat's captain was murdered with his teammate in an Israeli airstrike in early 2025.
The four finalists will play each other in two separate finals: The central and southern Gaza/the Gaza City and the north.
The champions will be determined by a head-to-head match between the two finals winners.
