"Government insiders have told the Guardian the project can be approved on a strict reading of Britain’s climate obligations, in part because once the oil is exported, the emissions from burning it no longer count against domestic targets. “Miatta has more latitude than you might think,” said one."

This is insanity masquerading as creative accounting.
EXCL: The giant Rosebank oilfield can be approved without breaching the UK’s emission targets, according to government insiders, in a boost to those in the cabinet who are pushing for it to be given the go-ahead.

Sources also say the Treasury has already accounted for billions of pounds’ worth of tax revenue from Rosebank and so would be faced with a shortfall should it be rejected.

#Budget2026: lots of small measures but nothing that seriously addresses the scale of the cost of living crisis, now set to worsen sharply over the next year. Banks, making extraordinary profits in the last few years will be breathing a sigh of relief that they got off so lightly

"Nothing of this scale has been seen in the United States, experts say, since the federal government’s counterinsurgency against the New Left and the anti-war movement in the 1960s and 1970s."

How did Lula win the runoff? By winning over those who didn’t vote for him in round 1. His biggest gains came in places with more women, more white voters and more evangelicals. 🧵

How did Lula come from behind to crush Bolsonaro?

In short, turnout.

Bolsonaro's vote share barely moved. Lula banked millions of votes from those who didn't vote in 1st round and won eliminated candidates' votes.

A remarkable mobilisation. 2nd round turnout usually below 1st.

🚨 Lula Mounts Comeback, Wins Brazil Election

With 96% of polling stations counted, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has pulled ahead of Flávio Bolsonaro by about 4.1 million votes, 51.73% to 48.27%, according to Brazil's Superior Electoral Court (TSE). Projections show Lula ential term against the son of jailed former President Jair Bolsonaro, who beat him by more than 2 million votes in the first round and led the early count tonight.

Datafolha, the polling institute of the newspaper Folha de S.Paulo, has called the race for Lula. So has Andrei Roman, CEO of the pollster AtlasIntel, even though his firm's final poll on Saturday had Bolsonaro narrowly ahead. The Brazilian outlet ICL also called it for Lula. The TSE has not yet declared an official result.

🚨🇧🇷 Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Cristiano Zanin extended voting nationwide by two hours, to 7 p.m. Brasília time, after President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva's campaign reported bus shortages in nine states during Sunday's runoff against Flávio Bolsonaro, the son of jailed olsonaro.

🔸Electoral rules require cities to run free transit at weekday levels on election day. In Salvador, in Lula's northeastern stronghold, Bahia's electoral court ordered the arrest of the city's mobility secretary, Pablo Souza, for withholding buses. In São Paulo, a court had ordered Mayor Ricardo Nunes, a Bolsonaro ally, to put out the full fleet. Lula's campaign says still only about 60% of buses were running.

🔸 Zanin stepped in after justice Kassio Nunes Marques, who has faced criticism over his alleged bias in favor of Bolsonaro, failed to rule before 5 p.m. when voting was set to close, leading to scenes of confusion at polling locations as some sites were forced to reopen.

🔸 Lula told reporters he had never complained about an election, win or lose. "But this time something abominable is happening," he said, according to The Guardian.

🔸 The fallout could reach beyond a delayed count. Eloísa Machado de Almeida, a constitutional law professor at FGV in São Paulo, said that if mayors coordinated with the Bolsonaro campaign to keep people from voting, Flávio's ticket and any mandate it wins could be annulled, and he could be barred from running.

🔸 It's not the first time. In the 2022 runoff, which Lula narrowly won, federal highway police under then-President Jair Bolsonaro stopped buses carrying voters, mostly in the northeast.

URGENTE

🇫🇷 Far-right groups attacked protesters in 14 French cities during Saturday's nationwide marches, according to Mathilde Panot, who leads the left-wing France Unbowed in parliament. "The police were present but allowed these individuals to act. Why?" she asked.

In Nice, dozens of hooded militants beat demonstrators, injuring three people, before police arrested 11 of them. France Unbowed lawmaker Louis Boyard said about 50 neo-Nazis "armed with knives and iron bars" roamed the city freely, and demanded answers from Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez: "Why did the Ministry of the Interior do nothing to prevent this violence?"

Nuñez, briefing reporters Saturday evening, blamed "radical far-left and ultra-left militants" for breaking away from the marches "to commit illegal acts," without mentioning the far right. He said nearly 1,000 people were arrested nationwide on Saturday.
