Travis Bazzana says the fear of striking out actually makes you strike out more
“I feel like I always had, deep down, confidence and belief in myself. But freshman year, I definitely rode some waves where my confidence would dip a little bit. I’d still be confident, but my lly change, my plan at the plate, on defense, my mental state. My confidence would dip, but it was like the confidence dip would throw off where my thoughts were at as a whole.”
“Freshman year was up and down. I’d ride waves where I’d punch out the first at-bat of the game, and then I’d be worried about getting to two strikes later in the game because I didn’t want to punch again. It was that fear of striking out. And you obviously end up striking out more, at least I thought I did, because I ended up swinging at all these one-strike pitches because I’m like, ‘I just got to swing.’ They throw something in the dirt and I’m like, ‘I got to hit it,’ and I’d play foul it off or whatever it was.”
“So I think being worried about striking out just threw me off in little bits freshman year because I had such high expectations for myself. I always do. But once the older guys kind of stepped up and showed what they could do and I was struggling, I was like, ‘Damn, I just kind of lost some confidence,’ and rode it up and down.”
“The biggest change, once I learned where I was weak freshman year, my biggest weaknesses, and I worked on them, I felt like I’d made the adjustments I needed swing-wise. Then I talked to all the people close to me about what the approach adjustments were going to be and where I was making myself struggle, where I was getting myself out offensively freshman year.”
“I was chasing heavily in hitter’s counts. I’d get 2-0, 3-1, and I would swing at things that I would never swing at, out of the zone, because I’m thinking to myself before that pitch when I’m struggling, ‘Now’s my chance to hit the double, hit the home run. I have to take advantage of this fastball right here. I have to.’ And then I’d swing at something terrible because I was trying to do too much versus just being on time.”
“The other part of it was I’d get to one strike and I’d also swing at a very high clip and maybe be way too contact-oriented with one strike versus getting a pitch to drive and actually do damage because I was trying not to get to two strikes.”
“I talked to the people I needed to, figured out a more clean, consistent approach in the box, and I had a clear, consistent, confident plan most of the time when I went to the plate. That was what propelled me as much as the swing stuff propelled me.”
“I was this much better freshman to sophomore year as a talented player, but my mental game, my consistency, my ability to consistently go out and perform because of where I was at here and my routines and everything, I got that much better at that.”
“So my numbers were exponentially better as a player, but really it was just a combination of two things. It wasn’t just the physical. Everything just kind of clicked together.”

NLCS Game 3. Top 7, Brewers down 2-1, runner on first, nobody out.
Blake Snell lives off the plate. Jake Bauers made him come back to it, then hit the 11th pitch of the at-bat 412 feet for the lead.
Here's how he earned it.🧵

A look into how we use @TrajektSports on a bat to ball day at @DrivelineBB AZ.
We can design the environment individually using the pitch type and training bat to drive the mechanical and path adaptation each hitter is working on.
Example: @CooperWhitton hitting high ride RH o promote an earlier coil in his load to set him up to get his hips open into foot plant. ☄️☄️

Next we talked about our bat to ball days. The focus shifts to producing quality ball flight. We use mixed pitch tunnels most often on these days so we can train bat to ball and swing decisions at the same time. We can also have each hitter see the pitch type that best drives the s working on.
Trajekt lets us train mechanics, bat path, and swing decisions in an environment that’s as close to game-like as it gets. This conversation took place during the college summer, but the same holds true for pros this offseason.

I've recently been exploring the different methods that hitters use to adjust to pitches.
Here are 3 hitters manipulating their mechanics from load to downswing to create very similar mechanics in the swing phase.

Amazing to watch the growth over the last year of Driveline. Operations in Japan, Dominican Republic, and stealth deployments under NDA are going super well. Launchpads being installed in colleges nationwide!
Pro athletes streaming into all locations.
Alumni dominating upper echelons of the game.
Several research papers in the final stages of peer review, a patent recently granted for our Intended Zone Projector technology...
And some of our greatest R&D / Sports Science accomplishments haven't even been finalized/announced yet.
Much more to come as we continue to pick up velocity of development and shipping. Right in the face of the doomers and haters, which provides me a non-zero amount of joy, I must admit.

Now Cam Castro in the GM spot under Taylor Smith with the A's! Big time.

Getting full-signal bat tracking data from every hitting session — whether in-gym or remote — allows us to track progress better than ever
Blast has always given metrics at impact, but now we can actually track how the barrel is moving through space

Our lab’s bat path analysis, on every swing you take at home.
In August, one of our remote hitters was clipping balls deep and hooking balls out front. His Blast swings, run through our lab’s bat path models, showed his path getting flat through the zone and working uphill too d his loading strategy. The next day, his bat stayed vertical through the zone about 60% longer.
You can’t get this level of insight anywhere other than Driveline Basebal

VBA & Swing Path Tilt ➡️ not the same metric.
LHH⬇️= Steep Tilt w/ flat VBA @ contact
RHH⬇️= Steep Tilt & holds line through contact
Tilt is the plane the barrel moves through 40 MS before contact while VBA is the barrel's angle measured @ contact.
Discrepancies between the two ofteon @ impact & could be a result of a hitter making last minute compensations in their swing to try & achieve flush contact.

1/ I built this scouting dashboard with a goal throughout: make the data digestible and actionable for hitters.
The project simulates preparing Tampa Bay’s lineup to face Milwaukee. Here’s a closer look at two sections: “What to look for” and the "Count flowchart".

Today's comp: XBH derby
- Extra-base hits score
- Bonus points when contact lands inside the POC range.
- One round with each speed trainer
Swing for damage with a path able to catch it at multiple POC's

Some pretty ridiculous pitch locations turned into hits this postseason.
These are fun to watch, but they also make me think about how we're preparing hitters. How can we help them find the barrel when things get weird?

Simple constraints for bat path adjustments: pitch type, pitch location & ball flight targets.
Keeps the hitter external. Their focus stays on the pitch and the batted ball outcome.
