I’m confused here. Why is it a problem that Chinese companies are investing in manufacturing entities and infrastructure in African countries that create jobs to employ Africans (and ultimately reduce the flow of economic migrants to Europe and North America)?
Good @FT article about Chinese companies opening factories in Africa to serve the US market, generally tariff-free b/w AGOA and most African countries not facing Trump 301 tariffs.

US needs to rethink rules of origin—low tariff US-Africa trade should not benefit China….

Still, I’d like to see more people of African descent tackle economics and economic development topics. There are so few of us writing, publishing, analyzing, etc.

and it’s not easy

One of the best decisions I made was to ensure my book is available in Nigeria…

…and Nigerians are reading it.

It gladdens my heart when I get that random email, every couple of weeks, that says “you changed my perspective… the way I see things”

…and that matters

It sucks to be governed by a bunch of two-bit roving bandits.
This is the craziest Trump admin drama happening imo. @AlinaHabba accused @RichardGrenell of stealing millions from her husband. But it turns out the check was from the Congolese govt and her husband is an advisor to the president & owns mines in Congo!?! Shadiest shit possible.

Your regular reminder to not unnecessarily catastrophize about African economies.
Moody's raised its outlook for sub-Saharan African countries to positive on Wednesday, saying reforms had helped them weather inflationary pressures, while strong commodity prices and easier access to financing had improved their fiscal positions. reuters.com/world/africa/m…

Suppose every development economist stopped working tomorrow. No more papers, RCTs ground to a halt, and the whole field shut down overnight.

Would Africa’s growth rate in 2040 look any different?

This was my first question to @kopalo in today's podcast, links below :)
Does Africa need development economics?

This week on Ideas in Development (@vox_dev), @kopalo joined me to discuss the craft of policymaking and the economic research that Africa needs.

🎙️ New Episode of the Africa Urban Lab Podcast: Ken Opalo on State Building, Urbanization & Economic Growth

In this episode, Africa Urban Lab Founder & Executive Director @kurtislockhart sits down with @kopalo,@kopaloate Professor at @Georgetown’s School of Foreign Service and writer otive, to explore state capacity, economic growth, political institutions, and development across Africa.

Ken describes urbanization as a potential “cheat code” for state building, explaining how cities can make populations easier to reach, strengthen public service delivery, and generate the revenue needed to support growing populations. He also explores why practical urban planning and infrastructure matter, and how subnational politics shape the way states develop.
