I’m grieving the deaths of the two Israeli soldiers killed in Hebron today, and praying for the full & speedy recovery of those who were injured.
I’ve spoken out loudly this week against Israel’s occupation of the West Bank, which imposes violence on a daily basis, and I will continue to do so. But violence is not the path to ending it — or to achieving safety, freedom, and peace for both Palestinians and Israelis.
And neither is collective punishment or ethnic cleansing of an entire neighborhood, or punishing millions of people for the criminal act of two, which Netanyahu has promised to enact in response.
I’ve seen a lot this week and I’ll have more to say about in the coming days (I’m on my way home shortly). There is a path to ending this excruciating cycle of violence. It starts by insisting that every life is sacred, that everyone is created in God’s image.
For now: Shabbat Shalom, to everyone who believes in the hard work of making peace & justice a reality, for everyone.

1. I hate weakness in myself, so when I see defenseless people being murdered they disgust me, because am disgusted by the weakness of defenselessness in me.
2. I desire power and the powerful side has the more impressive tools to apply power. I want power, so I side with the powerful side to also feel a little powerful.
3. I have so much pent up anger towards those who defy me I wish I could lash out so violently towards those who do not accept my superiority in the way that Israel lashes out.
4. I am envious of the attention the Palestinians get for their plight, because my pain has always been ignored. Palestinians should stop whining, because nobody cares when I show am hurting.
5. I already carry too much in this life, do not dare to now also demand I feel anything about any displaced Palestinians. I am defeated in my life too, so they should accept defeat and simply leave Palestine. End of story. Like my dreams have also ended.
Note that am talking only about people who can't be driven by personal material gain, like some politicians, academics, Israelis, etc, am talking only about those who have nothing tangible to gain from this, only some psychological payoff.
Am not saying they do this consciously, or that these are all possible scenarios and motivations, but something very close to this would come up in psychotherapy with these people.
This message is hard to get across, but I wish I could open people's eyes to this.
When people grab at straws to try and stop you from empathizing with Palestinians you're given clues about their personal stories.
Then it also makes sense why someone seriously thinks you should be ok with starving children in Gaza in 2026, or why there are no such starving children in Gaza in 2026, because supposedly 643 years ago in a place you've never heard of some other people were murdered.
And all the other weird jumps to never ever have to take a real look at the largest concentration of amputee kids in the world, Gaza.
