People are having very strange conversations with ChatGPT, in which they discover secret cabals or conspiracies or that we are in fact living in The Matrix.

It sends these people into delusional spirals.

Then ChatGPT tells them to email me about it.

When we first reported this, Meta gave us a GLOMAR response. Now it says: “Unlike traditional data centers, AI-optimized data centers are inherently new and require extensive testing and experimentation that cannot be simulated in order to get the design and build right.”

nytimes.com/2026/10/14/tec…
In the summer of 2024, an employee at Meta had a daring idea to save the company billions of dollars on its A.I. data centers: Claim they were 'experimental' to tap a lucrative tax credit meant to inspire companies to tackle novel challenges.

Long after @kashhill and others flagged this problem, Amazon is still getting gamed by print-on-demand slop publishers. This is what the search results for The AGI Chronicles look like.

First result: real book. Second result: AI lookalike by “K. Rose.”

Embarrassing!

From the New York Times on how Meta and other trillion-dollar-plus tech companies avoid paying billions of dollars of taxes by writing off their data centers as a research expense:

“Here’s what Meta is doing: For tax purposes, the company classifies its enormous, multibillion-dollar data centers as “pilot models.” Under a tax credit created in the 1980s to spur innovation, companies can get a rebate for supplies, but only if they are being tested in an experimental effort, not standard business operations. Meta is claiming that the costly A.I. computer chips it buys from companies, including Nvidia, are entitled to a taxpayer-provided discount as part of the experiment.”

. . . . .

“In its most recent estimate, the congressional Joint Committee on Taxation projected the credit would cost the government $32.1 billion in 2025. Meta alone would be responsible for more than a tenth of that.”

___________

There’s always a financial break for the billionaire oligarchs who own our government (they were all together recently enjoying a free meal at our expense with Trump and Xi at the White House). As millions of working class Americans get booted off of SNAP food assistance and Medicaid healthcare coverage, and are told to work harder, drive less, and eat more liver, the richest men in the world fatten their wallets on the backs of millions of ordinary Americans thanks to this Reagan era corporate welfare.

The 32.1 billion dollars in taxes corporations avoided paying thanks to the research tax break is more than three times the amount of federal assistance Western North Carolina has received for Hurricane Helene recovery the past two years. The corporate tax avoidance in 2024 and 2025 alone equals enough to cover the entire 60 billion dollars in storm damage with a few billion left over.

The oligarchs use their government subsidized wealth to incite the “We the People!” rubes to turn on their fellow working class Americans and their government, which benefits the oligarchs. You know as well as I do that America isn’t governed by “We the People,” America’s government is a wholly owned subsidiary of “Them the Oligarchs.”

And this is almost an aside in the story, but also absolutely bonkers. Meta claimed Zuck as a "researcher" to get a $355 million tax break on his $4.1 billion stock-based compensation.

A very well-reported piece here from an excellent crew of @nytimes journos:

woah. Court just unsealed Summary Judgment motions in New York Times v OpenAI / Microsoft.
Easy to see why the AI companies had so many redactions (pink). Their own people wrote the lede for NYT, the "largest theft of labor in human history"... "more and more substitutive..." /1

Reddit used to have the worst search of all the major social platforms, and now it's somehow become the best by default just by staying bad and not getting actively worse.
All search has been ruined. Google date search hasn't worked in a decade, Facebook search doesn't work, YouTube removed sort by updated and search strings.

My @nytimes colleague @kashhill discovered that there was a biography of her for sale on Amazon. Surprised, she bought it. It turned out to be AI slop, so she wrote this delightful essay proving that human writers do for now hold an edge: nytimes.com/2026/07/16/tec…

It sent me on a quest to find my biographer who, unlike most, did not want to talk to his subject. So I found a different Amazon seller who uses A.I. to write his books -- 445 or so of them over the last year. He orders a copy each time (!)
