L2BEAT was a public good in a league of its own. Many outlets informed users, few changed the landscape they covered. Each L2 that set out to climb L2BEAT's stages represented a win for Ethereum, its users, and its culture.
ETHBEAT's CROPS coverage is poised to be an even greater forcing function, one that gives every project a clear sense for the highest standards. We support their work wholeheartedly as this is the kind of accountability the ecosystem needs; well-informed users ask more of protocols, and protocols deliver better guarantees.
Congratulations @ethbeat_org on starting this next chapter.

L2BEAT is now ETHBEAT.
5+ years of keeping L2s accountable, now extended to privacy, interop, staking and beyond. One goal: transparency on the guarantees users get on Ethereum.
Thank you to the community that got us here. The next chapter starts today! x.com/i/article/2117…

AI accelerates development, no doubt. And yet, even though we use the latest frontier models, there's still a lot of human research needed to make sure you can trust us. And if you don't trust - verify. All our claims are onchain verifiable

October was busy at L2BEAT.
We shipped three new pages, added more projects and metrics to Privacy, published research, and ran a couple of community initiatives.

From Devcon 8:
@donnoh_eth says: "We are called L2BEAT, but the main focus for us moving forward will be privacy."
He flagged upgradeable privacy contracts as a risk and promised an announcement in his talk tomorrow.

We’re in Mumbai this week ! 🇮🇳
@bkiepuszewski, @kaereste, and @donnoh_eth will be around @EFDevcon.
If you’re building something you think L2BEAT should be looking at, or have questions about our research, come say hi.
You can also catch Luca on stage twice 👇

A wild thought - maybe keeping billions of dollars of other people’s money at a single address, accessible in bulk through internal infra, isn’t the best practice going forward? What if CEXs spent the next billion or two not on plugging future holes in their balance sheets after hacks, but rather investing in strengthening the onchain infra their businesses rely on? I know a project or two who could use a fraction of these funds to improve the whole space.

Private blockchains are like private jets - they have their place, and for some people they make sense. But most businesses will do just fine flying economy until the numbers in the spreadsheet justify going private.

We need more crypto challengers.
Institutions and enterprises aren’t going to deliver on a silver platter the mainstream adoption many projects are hoping for.
To be clear, I still believe crypto will take over institutional and enterprise finance in the long run. But I don’t see it happening through incumbents simply integrating crypto rails, no matter how much sense that may make over time.
It’s like Revolut. Any bank could have offered cheap FX at interbank rates, and it was an obvious win for so many customers. But retail currency exchange was a highly lucrative, stable business. It worked just fine. Messing with it meant internal friction, stepping on other people’s toes, and creating a lot of unnecessary hassle for no obvious gain. Pushing for change from within was an almost impossible, thankless task.
It took an outsider with no lucrative FX business to protect to turn cheap FX into a competitive advantage. That external push triggered an avalanche across the industry, and the rest is history.
We need challengers like that with crypto. TradFi works just fine the way it is. But an incumbent’s soft cushion can be a challenger’s opportunity.
Crypto rails can make financial services easier, cheaper, leaner, more transparent, and more capable. But that change won’t come from within, where every innovation threatens real humans down the corridor and looks like a risky business case overall.
For some time now, I’ve been looking for examples of such challengers, even small ones, using crypto to gain a competitive edge in real-world markets. I’ll probably share some of their stories eventually. In the meantime, if any examples come to mind, pls DM me or share them in the comments.
