I get it now. Even as a kid, when Obi Wan says “my allegiance is to the Republic, to democracy!” it felt so … hollow.
And when Padmé says, “sounds an awful lot like a dictatorship to me,” I had the same reaction Anakin did. “Well, if it works.”
George Lucas didn’t understand Anakin, but he understood our cultural milieu and he pulled the archetype from it. Brilliant in its own way. His storytelling surpassed even his own understanding.
