ROLI has officially gone into administration. I love my Seaboard Rise 2, and would be concerned about losing access to the software that comes with it, since it does a ~monthly licence check. Fortunately, AI exists, and the music software that I bought now runs offline :)

I use this molecule as a sort of benchmark, seeing what new tools can tell me about it. Today that's getting predicted 3D structure and vibrational modes with the vitrify model.
One day I'll lab test all these preds but for now it's fun to watch the pretty animations :D

Watching an LED's peak wavelength shift as it warms back up from dry-ice temperatures. Not as flashy as the LN2, but still cool to see :)

I wondered if this was normal, and I was only noticing it all now that I'm paying more attention haha. Glad to see it's considered atypical (for now)!
ai x bio just had a ridiculous 48 hours:

- Omnii-1: AI-designed phage given to a patient
- Claude designed scorpion toxin binders
- OpenAI acquires Orchestra Bio

- Baker Lab: RFD4-Proteina
- Chaperone: agent framework for protein design
- BioEmu2: protein simulations

- Artios: enzyme design model
- OpenAI + PerturbAI: agents find brain disease clues
- Xaira X-Scientist

anything missing?

Cool model! Taking it for a quick spin. Here are some predictions it makes for a biliverdin-binding serpin protein that some tree frogs use for some of their green coloring. Seems like it finds the pocket alright :)
Public preview of BioEmu2! @MSFTResearch AI for Science’s new foundation model for biomolecular structure, dynamics and function. Open weights, MIT license.

New toy :) I learned about these 'little garden spectrometers', apparently a passion project by a "Mr Kang" who makes them DIY and sells them for 10X less than a comparable unit elsewhere. Very nice!

I'm pointing the new Deepseek Flash at a few hwrebench.com tasks the previous one couldn't quite crack...

Friday night mucking around in the lab and tidying up while a PCR machine whirrs away, after a good long week of computational work. Weekend contains potential climbing, chanterelles, pumpkin pie, science. Model is training til Monday and vals are still going up. Life is good!

Argon gets 83% BTW, I'm going to have to make a harder version of this eval!
3.5 Flash gets up to 67% on SpecID, and beats me on the non-Johno-created alternate test set with 65%. Top human performance exceeded in just over a year.
(This is an eval I made where the model must ID Zimbabwean organisms in iNat photos - johnowhitaker.dev/mini-projects/…)

We're hiring across many roles at Trillium Labs, @trillium_labs, to build the open scientific ecosystem for LLMs. Most important hires right now (ideally with start dates soon):
* Full time post-training researchers
* Engineers with experience with popular open-source libraries (megatron, MILES, sglang, Tinker, etc.)
* Mission-aligned generalists, non-profit ops, etc.
* Student researchers

I'm also personally interviewing for MATS right now, which will be very aligned research.

Please reply, email me, DM me, etc AND submit the form on our website.

Excited to build this team. All early hires will work directly with me on all sorts of fun puzzles to rapidly scale our impact.

Other trip highlights include the North American Aerospace Museum, fluorescent fungi, gorgeous coast stuff, and a brown pelican named Pip (sadly no bicycle @simonw, but I bet he could learn if we got him a lil one).

Every few years I have to Google this again, a never-ending humiliation ritual. Decades from now, post-singularity, floating in space somewhere, I'll need to switch a little current, dig out my old baggie of misc transistors, and yet again consult the same old datasheets 😂

With everyone busily using LLMs + Blender/Three.js to make 3D models, I thought I'd try a different geometric representation.

This dragon isn't a mesh, NeRF, 3DGS, or video model: it's 27kb of GLSL code (generated via LLM), defining a closed-form implicit surface. 🧵 [1/n]
