The rest of the world has eroded Africa's dominance in the men's distance events on the track, but the continent still reigns supreme in one event: the marathon.

Can World Half Marathon champion Andreas Almgren of Sweden change that in New York on Sunday?

25 years later, I can confirm I'm still supporting the Albion from afar. This match was one of my fondest memories of the Withdean era!
On this day 2001, Bobby Zamora scores the only goal as #ColU are beaten 1-0 at Withdean in Division Two (League One). The result, watched by a crowd of 6,531, means that #BHAFC stay 2nd in the table.

Frank Gagliano commanded the respect and love of the many, many lives he touched in running. A legend of the sport. RIP.
Frank “Gags” Gagliano, the Hall of Fame coach who guided more than a dozen Olympians across six decades, has died. He was 89.

Gagliano coached at nearly every level of the sport. As an assistant at Manhattan College, he helped the Jaspers win the 1973 NCAA indoor team title. He Georgetown, where his teams won 23 Big East championships and produced 140 All-Americans, and he was twice named national coach of the year.

At an age when most coaches retire, he became one of the country’s top professional coaches. He led the Reebok Enclave, the Nike Farm Team, Oregon Track Club Elite and, from 2010, the New Jersey-New York Track Club. His Olympians included John Trautmann, Steve Holman, Nicole Teter, Jonathon Riley, Nick Symmonds, Christian Smith, Julie Culley and Donn Cabral. At the 2008 U.S. Olympic Trials, Symmonds and Smith were part of the famous “Oregon Sweep” of the men’s 800m at Hayward Field.

A Bronx native, Gagliano was a quarterback at the University of Richmond, not a runner. He began coaching track in 1960 at Roselle Catholic High School in New Jersey, which had hired him with the promise of starting a football team that never came. In 1965, Roselle Catholic became the first high school to win both the DMR and 2-mile relay at the Penn Relays.

“I didn’t know anything about track,” he said in a 2014 interview. “But I accepted the offer because I really wanted to coach.”

Gags became one of the most influential coaches in American distance running. His philosophy was simple: strength plus speed. And when you hear “Hit it!” on the final turn, change gears.

Gagliano was inducted into the USTFCCCA Hall of Fame in 2003. This July, USA Track and Field named the men’s 800m at its national championships in his honor.

So there's no confusion, the Sheila Chepkirui who won the #21KValencia today (left) is not the same athlete who won the #TCSNYCMarathon in 2024 (right) and the Nagoya Women's Marathon in 2025 & 2026.

Yaseen Abdalla, who ran in the NCAA at Texas, Tennessee, and Arkansas, runs 59:12 at the Valencia Half Marathon.

That’s faster than Conner Mantz’s American record of 59:17, and Abdalla is a US citizen…but he represents Sudan internationally.

I spoke to Peres Jepchirchir's agent Gianni Demadonna about her positive test for EPO. He said doping control officers initially were not granted access to her house on the day of her test and had to call him before they could be let in.

Cole Sulser becomes the second member of the 2010 Dartmouth Big Green to pitch in the World Series (also Kyle Hendricks, who started Game 7 in 2016).

CAS overturns suspension in ABP case of Japanese race walker Koki Ikeda (2021 Olympic silver medalist).

I can't remember many ABP cases getting successfully overturned on appeal. Norah Jeruto's did. Any others I'm missing?
The AIU acknowledges the decision of the Court of Arbitration for Sport, published today, in the case of Koki Ikeda. The AIU will consider the full decision and will make no further immediate comment.

Peres Jepchirchir is the 2021 Olympic marathon champion, 2025 world marathon champion, winner of Boston/NYC/London Marathons. Three-time World Half Marathon champion.

One of the biggest doping busts ever if the suspension is upheld.
The AIU has provisionally suspended reigning World and former Olympic champion, Peres Jepchirchir, after an out-of-competition sample, collected in Kenya prior to her recent Sydney Marathon victory, returned an adverse analytical finding for EPO. 1/2
