It is not the moat that binds. It is only yourself.

7 years ago it looked like Tesla Robotaxi would have competition, but it would be 5 years behind. Now it looks like there just isn't going to be any.

Thrusters make Roadster the durable ne plus ultra for cars. There exists in the world no group that can exceed the Tesla + SpaceX collaboration for this capability and no way to outperform the Roadster without it. It is the final word.

Grok Bot just one-shotted the 17 page B-sized permit drawings package for a solar project I'm working on. They're the nicest permit drawings I've ever seen. I'm going to let it run the whole permit process.

There’s an interesting parallel between how the math world is responding to the OpenAI math drop and how the Go world responded to AlphaGo. Go came back stronger after a period of dismay. I predict math will do the same. Tools make us better.

TBF - HD maps was a good approach when Waymo started. And if deep learning hadn’t come along it would be the only way to do this. But deep learning did come along and now we have camera based general driving intelligence. I think it’s good for the world that we have two different approaches to this problem being pursued. We have Tesla as a primary path and Waymo as a backup. It doesn’t look like we’re going to need the backup, but it’s good to have it.
Waymo was born too early.

The HD map was a brilliant crutch: centimeter-perfect, hand-checked, roof-lidar-dependent… and impossible to scale.

12 minutes on why the map is proof that the intelligence is missing, and why FSD drives anywhere. 🎥👇

8 lidars is no substitute for good cameras. Lidar can reliably identify nearby obstacles. The lidar here is telling the car that the way is clear, but it stopped. In the real world you stop if your inadequate cameras hallucinate because *safety* first, right? So you can’t do better than your cameras allow. The Zoox had 3 lidars telling the vehicle it was clear, but it didn’t trust its lidar over its cameras. So it stopped.
I didn't know what a @zoox was until now when a distracted driver crashed into one that was apparently malfunctioning in rush hour traffic in Las Vegas today.

It’s unfortunate that we can’t ramp at the rate that minimizes total harm. But the public dialogue surrounding self driving vehicles has become a minefield. Innumeracy is rampant and objectivity has gone out of style.
@SawyerMerritt We are being extremely careful with autonomous safety, just as we are with making Teslas the safest cars in the world for human driving

Working from NHTSA data: a 5x safer car avoids $6,000 of harm per year, $4,800 of which is uncompensated death and disability for vehicle occupants. FSD is $1,200 per year.

11 years ago I watched an F9 booster landing and it was one of the highlights of my year. I played that video over and over. The second one took a while. Today I watched 4 (1 in person) and man it just never gets old. What an amazing engineering achievement.

This really brought home to me
this new machine creativity.
I don’t know the recipe, but it’s more than vibes I see.
There’s substance in the lyrics and there’s nuance for the critics
And a story being told in this AI homily.
And a message being sold by the Ai homily.
Made with Claude Opus 5.5.

The fearmongering about AI always makes us forget that NOTHING WENT FOOM, as was always predicted.

Send this to your doomer friend who has a very high P(Doom).

Accelerate.

Makes sense actually. Humanity needs a mix of “live on your knees” and“die on your feet” if it’s going to survive.

Jonestown was a narrative that inoculated the US public against zealotry. As a meme it was pretty long lasting but it’s worn off now and we are once again weak against the perils of apocalyptic prophesies. grokipedia.com/page/Jonestown
