Firefox 159 has landed! This is a pretty big one for web dev stuff:

🎉 CSS scroll-driven animations, both scroll() and view().
🎉 Scoped custom element registries.
🎉 Streaming sanitization of HTML.

And more! developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Moz…

JPEG XL is newly available in all major engines, but how does it stack up against other formats?

A quick demo of how gain maps help with HDR image rendering, even on HDR screens.

In browsers, JPEG and AVIF support gain maps. JPEG XL does not. AVIF is the better choice, as the source can be 10bit, and obviously the file size is a lot smaller.

More dishonesty in JPEG XL discourse.

Why compare to a 25+ yr old format rather than anything more modern?

Why claim HDR support, without making it clear that gain maps (an important part of HDR in varying environments) are not supported?
Chrome 155 adds support for JPEG XL (.jxl) → goo.gle/4yYpSjW

Expect 30-50% smaller file sizes than traditional JPEGs, native HDR, progressive rendering, and lossless JPEG transcoding.

Under the hood, Chrome uses jxl-rs, a pure Rust decoder built for maximum memory

@ChromiumDev So, the "unguided agent" has produced a modal that animates in & out in all browsers, but with the power of Google's Modern Web Guidance it has used a pattern that only animates out in Chrome?

Does the skill warn the developer that it's biasing the output this way?

We've loved seeing folks post their rankings, so we've added a share button!

You can either share your list via the site directly, or copy your list as markdown/html for your own blog.

I'm really glad we're running this again. It helped us prioritise a lot of work this year.

The previous method was 👍 on GitHub issues, which (imo) is too easily gamed, either intentionally or unintentionally.

I've proposed "progressive image rendering" as a focus area for Interop 2027, so we can get progressive JPEG XL support in Safari, and progressive AVIF support in both Safari and Firefox. github.com/web-platform-t…

This is a great article. I've always been sus about the hype around JPEG XL, as it never stacked up when I actually tested it with web use-cases.

Playing around with an idea: responsive code.

The build script creates up to 5 versions of each code sample using Prettier, and a container query displays the right one.

Brotli means the filesize overhead is very small.
