@LimYenKheng I feel like there's a huuuuge difference between getting beat by another professional boxer in an official match (pre-AI scooping) vs getting beat by a heroin addict that broke into your house to steal money (AI scoop by cranks) or betting beat on mafia's order (AI scoop by labs)

10 remarks on AI and math that can be true all at once:
1. The recent progress is stunning and exciting.
2. The Quasi-Riemann Hypothesis is arguably Fields-medal level.
3. Mathematics is being transformed and there is no way back.
4. OpenAI doesn't give a fuck about the future of mathematics.
5. Half-baked unreadable preprints claiming major results can effectively stall mathematical progress.
6. Some mathematicians are responding with naive, overly defensive comments.
7. The social-media wankers framing this as "OpenAI tramples gatekeeping" have no experience of mathematical research.
8. The product of mathematics is clarity and understanding. Not theorems, by themselves.
9. Mathematics is a critical infrastructure of human cognition. The human need for understanding isn't obsolete and it can't be offloaded to machines.
10. We haven't "solved" mathematics and we won't get there before the Sun burns out.

@tdietterich The more accurate metaphor is that we had a lake with perfectly drinkable water, but then some foreigner, who is the owner of a sewage system, started to propagate the idea that there is even more water in the sewage, and now we are purifying the wastewater for some reason

@ElliotGlazer There also seems to be a bunch of formalizations that I found that have been weaker than the paper that i found using opus 5.5, i posted it on the leanprover zulip! Im not sure who to contact so the team could fix them :(!

Ethics and academic standards are in free fall.
How come this thing was a super funny illustration of the profanity of the AI-in-math situation, and now the trillion-dollar company is doing this at scale, we're reacting with "😱😱😱 oh my god so cool"

Personally, I expected worse (in terms of negative impact on math/math community) from the Mathslop-apocalypse.
Personally, I think that Erdős-Turan conjecture on arithmetic progressions might be the largest one, given the history of awards.

And as expected, the writing itself is absolutely abysmal. I would bet that, from this initial list, there would be problems (solutions) that will never be digested due to a lack of willingness from experts to serve as night soil collectors

Idk about you guys, but for me, there cannot be anything in the upcoming OpenAI announcement of a gazillion solved open problems that would impress me after Muse's results. It was the peak of humanity

@francoisfleuret Before you write sth idiotic like "AI can/will explain better than any human, too", I must say there is no amount of explanation in the world that will make you (emphasis on "you") understand, say, Lindenstrauss' work. A great mathematician, however, can potentially understand it

@francoisfleuret They cannot be 'not relevant' as there is no value to a pure mathematical 'result' without a person who understands and can explain it to others. For practical purposes, you don't even need to prove theorems, you might just assume something is true

This is one of the funniest things I’ve seen recently
@thomasahle @markchen90 If you turn that off then instead of improving the model for everyone it only improves it for OpenAI internally

The way OpenAI handled this Navier--Stokes situation was the first time I've actually felt disgust at the whole AI in math situation. Like watching a billionare celebrate his hunting prowess by mounting the head of an endagered rhino on his wall, after 1000 soldiers trapped it.

@prz_chojecki I don't think you understand the term bubble. The dot-com bubble was real, even though internet, and specifically online businesses/e-commerce are legit and one of the best inventions ever.
