A provocation: if this GLSL shader was one shoted with a skills.md that requests to impersonate me, and indeed does pull my work on shapes, lighting, animation and delivers my style, maths, techniques and conventions (to the variable name)... isn't this actually, MY brain's work?

Should I claim it as mine?

Claude only did the mechanical/easy part of immitating my usual moves to put this together.
Video 2 GLSL

I gave Claude Opus 5.5 a 20-second video clip. It rebuilt the whole thing as one GLSL fragment shader: 156 KB of code, no textures, no video frames. Just math, looping seamlessly

I don'y care about legality or thics. I'm asking, philosophically speakimg, isn't this actually my work?

Shouldn't I take pride on it? Because I somehow do.

Is that wrong? Weird?

It is a NEW feeling for sure.

Mixing Blue and Yellow colors in a computer gives Gray. But when you mix Blue paint and Yellow paint you get Green.

---> Can we please fix paint to behave like real computers? <---

While I can agree with Zuckerberg's vision for AI (meta.com/thefutureisfor…), I find it problematic when he says "I think it is important to protect the principle that you can learn from anything you can observe".

“Observe” feels harmless and innocuous, almost passive. In reality, AI labs actively bypass all safety measures in order to extract all data they can at any cost, obviously ignoring crawler directives, but also impersonating users, engaging in deceptive behavior, and proactively implementing workarounds to any new protection measure you set to try to keep the boat afloat and safeguard your users. At that point, you can no longer in good faith call that “observing”; it’s straight “sacking“ and “pillaging“.

For your next essay, @finkd, please double click on that framing around "anything you can observe" and expand into a couple paragraphs on how you are thinking about this important issue.

We watched the total solar eclipse a few hours ago. I went with tempered expectations since I do actively keep up with astrophysics news and knew exactly what we were about to watch. Or so I thought.

In my mind I imagined this would go down more or less like when you finally see the Mona Lisa or the Statue of Liberty in real life and go, "ok, just like on TV, cool; so, where do we go for dinner now?"

But this wasn't that. In two short seconds, the darkness took over the daylight, the blinding sun became black, and the huge corona ignited around it like Sauron's eye in the middle of the sky. Of course I knew all these would happen, I had seen live streams in the past, but still I wasn't prepared for the actual experience of it.

For ancient unknowing humans and their poor souls, this must have been the ultimate terrifying force driving the creation of mythology and worship.

To this day, I still enumerate chapters and file sequenes with 10, 20, 30, ... instead of 1, 2, 3, ... so I can squeeze in unexpected items without renaming them to make room for them.

Unlike RENUM in GWBASIC, sometimes renaming is a very expensive operation. Film makers know this well from naming shots.

I've found this cute approximation for arctan(x). I'm not suggesting you should use it, all I'm saying is it's cute.

hey look, an AI artist got hurt because somebody stole his prompt
Never do this:

Passing off someone else’s work as your own.

This Grok Imagine effect with the day-to-night transition was created by me — and I’m pretty sure that person knows it.

To make things worse, their copy has more impressions than my original post.

Not cool 👎
Community note
"Day-to-night transition" is a basic AI prompt for time-lapses, used in Runway AI (Oct 2024) & Stable Diffusion since 2023. Not proprietary—sharing isn't theft.

The four ways to solve all your problems*:

1) reparametrize ("hi trigonometric substitution")
2) change the frame of reference ("from here, this looks simpler!")
3) make the cow spherical ("I think nobody will notice")
4) computationally simulate many possibilities, pick best** ("I really have no idea what I'm doing")

* in electrical engineering, probably other domains too
** you could see modem deep neural network training as an evolution of 4
