Another one: The Legend of Kyrandia: Book Three - Malcolm's Revenge (1994) was the first Westwood game featuring VQA videos. Here's how the intro looks like in beautiful 16 colors, on an Atari STe.

Here's the outcome of an (AI assisted) experiment to get the WEC Le Mans arcade game converted to Atari STE.

The STE reproduces the colours quite nicely but just doesn't have the horsepower to run the arcade logic. I think lots would need to be stripped back to make this viable.

What Vanda says. Had the honor to meet her in Manaus last year. She's impressive.

Working on an interactive tool to inspect video encodings. Already found two inefficiencies in the encoder. Quality update incoming.

Westwood's 1996 Blade Runner trailer encoded using Atari ST-optimized STV video codec.

Top: original 256 color video.
Middle: high quality STV.
Bottom: low quality STV.

Both STV videos were encoded with the "high effort" setting. Hiqh quality uses about twice the bitrate.

Quality update: Westwood's 1996 trailer for Lands of Lore: Guardians of Destiny. Played back on an 1989 Atari STe from hard drive. 16 colors, 320x200 pixels, 15 frames per second. File size: 9.4MB.
By the way, did anybody actually play the game?

So what's the news here? Updated the encoder side only. The tile comparison metric now takes tail energy in cut-off DCT coefficients into account, preferring smoother tiles. Fewer DCT coefficients makes encoding faster which allows for more lookahead, sharper scene transitions.

Why do we give this entitled racist grifter a platform at all? Doesn’t the tech community stand for other values?

For my #AtariST friends in Spain: A new issue of Micromanía is hitting the stores around Nov 20, featuring Command&Conquer on the cover and...
Well, I won't spoil the surprise. Seriously considering picking up a copy myself, though.

Out now: Command & Conquer for Atari ST 0.3.8! Fixed: GDI out-of-memory on first winter mission, final map selection. Nicer: winter theater palette, map effects, transition fonts. Faster: animations, Blitter (about 7% on Falcon) and redraw (about 1–2% on the STe).

... and a quick 0.3.9 follow-up, because 0.3.8 was missing some files and had broken colors in the campaign map.

Surprised that there are, in fact, winter scenario missions in Command & Conquer's GDI campaign. I thought those were only for multiplayer. Now I need to optimize the Atari ST palette for that scenario as well and prevent an out-of-memory crash on machines with only 4MB of RAM.
