My god, this film. On the big screen it’s a whole other experience. A work of such incredible, visceral power and intent. Every single person involved is doing their absolute greatest work. Feels like it’s been beamed through time and space.

Just saw that Bill Oakley liked my joke about The Birds TV series. For me this is the equivalent of Messi complimenting a footballer on how they kicked the ball. It has made my week!

Last shot of series 1: A bird appears
HBO is officially developing ‘THE BIRDS’, a new series inspired by Alfred Hitchcock's film.

Starring Sarah Snook, the series is a modern-day reimagining of the film set in Alaska with a murder mystery at the center.

Spontaneous Combustion (1989): Shouldn’t work but it kind of does in a messy way, mostly thanks to Brad Dourif at unprecedented levels of intensity. Vicious satire on the ‘50s revival of the 1980s and the horrors it ignored. Would pair well with Bob Balaban’s Parents (1988)

As someone who saw The Devils far too young on the BBC in the 1990s, the hype around this re-release is genuinely blowing my mind. Selling out cinemas everywhere. Huge lobby standees. It’s utterly crazy in the best way

Eaten Alive (1976): A truly horrible film, hypnotically upsetting and intense without let-up. Tobe Hooper can do this stuff like no one else. A drone-scored pageant of human mania and suffering! The only film I’ve seen that’s redder than Suspiria

There’s a shot in this where a monkey appears to lie down in despair that genuinely felt like an image from hell

‘Favourite’ line in this was when someone says to a gangster “quick, go and get your mob doctor”. Like they would specifically refer to them as a mob doctor
Oh dear. Interesting idea thrown away. Looks like a British TV crime drama. Script and some of the supporting performances are shocking. No sense of character, tragedy, tension, atmosphere. Club scene late on is one of the worst things I’ve seen this year. FX the sole highlight

Apparently the serum that changes the cellular structure of his body also allows him to change the clothes he’s wearing? Who’da thunk it
