I moved back. Home. After 23 years in beloved Boston. In the middle of uncertainty, 3 months after my house was hatefully destroyed in Beirut.
Cheers for love, hope, purpose & life with the most resilient & life-loving people of #Lebanon, & the most amazing family of @AUB_Lebanon

Hi @RobertKennedyJr :
I am a Professor at Harvard & AUB, and an Arab surgeon-scientist. I produce science. Not enough for Nobel, but hey, I am trying. Coffee on me if you want to meet one day.

HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. falsely claimed while campaigning this week that Arabs "don’t produce science" or "win the Nobel Prize." Here are some of the Arab scientists and scholars who have won the Nobel Prize and other accolades in their field. trib.al/j7Wnuc2

Sometimes, a rainbow 🌈 over Beirut & @AUB_Lebanon on a calm Sunday morning is a subtle hug or kiss that reminds us why we stay and why we return.

@hayfaraniHaytham for these thoughtful words. My heart is with Charbel and Soha, whose pain is beyond anything words can express. You raise an essential point: empathy cannot be reduced to prescribed phrases or algorithms. Genuine human connection requires presence, attention, and the ability to truly listen and care. Technology may transform how we communicate, but we must never allow it to replace what makes us human.

All the love to Charbel & Soha. Nothing is more painful than losing a kid. Nothing.
In a world where even empathy, sympathy & validation are taught through forced phrases, courses & algorithms, humanity needs to take a step back, for a minute, & examine what genuine human connectedness is truly about.

When Mathias Habib died last April, I visited his parents, my friends Charbel and Soha. I wrote then about the unbearable grief of losing a child and the troubling questions surrounding his death. I ended with these words: “This is not a conclusion. It is a warning”.
Six months ries even greater weight.
Following an investigation in Lebanon, Charbel and Soha have filed a lawsuit against OpenAI and its CEO, Sam Altman. The documented exchanges between Mathias and ChatGPT, as presented in the complaint, raise deeply disturbing questions about the influence artificial intelligence can exert on young minds.
I said then that this was not about blaming philosophy or technology. I stand by that. But technology cannot be separated from the responsibility of those who design it, particularly when it begins to assume the role of a confidant, mentor, or emotional companion to a child.
We cannot celebrate technological progress while treating human vulnerability as an acceptable risk. Nor can we expect parents to protect their children from dangers they cannot see.
The courts will determine legal responsibility. But our collective moral responsibility cannot wait for a verdict.
I stand with Charbel and Soha in their courageous determination to protect other children. Mathias deserves to be remembered for the beautiful though short life he lived, and for the lives his story may help save.
Progress must never outpace our humanity.
All my love to the Habib Family 🤍 🕊️

The American University of Beirut (AUB) held its student elections for the 2026–27 academic year on Friday, October 16, with 255 candidates seeking to represent their peers. This year's elections combined campus campaigning and debate with initiatives supporting student gagement.
