It was great to meet Allie Mellen (@hackerxbella) at #RSAC2026, earlier this week. Allie released her timely book ‘Code War: How Nations Hack, Spy, and Shape the Digital Battlefield’ this year, after putting 2+ years of hard work into it.

Most people get this backwards: cyber war isn't coming out of nowhere. It’s deeply rooted in history, politics, and culture. Yet we pretend it's all about gadgets and glitches. Why?

Here's what I learned: cybersecurity is a reflection of nation-states' visions of control, power, and survival. Ask @hackerxbella @forrester Researcher & Author of the new book Code War - and she’ll tell you that clues are in the history.

The principle: nations use cyber if it serves their strategic goals—diplomatic, military, economic. Think Russia’s DDoS against Ukraine’s power grid or China's Golden Project for control. It’s not random chaos, it’s calculated.

In practice: when Russia targets Ukraine, it’s about more than power—it's about sending a message, shaping the narrative, and testing limits. Cyber becomes an extension of warfare, a tool for confusion and control. Allie’s insight: the history of each country shapes how they wage cyber control —China’s control, Russia’s disinformation, US’s complex freedoms. These are not just tactics—they’re cultural strategies for survival.

And the future? Allie warns that attribution is becoming harder, deepfake disinformation more believable, and AI-driven attacks more coordinated. We’re blurring lines between reality and illusion, weaponizing trust itself.
