Nick Wright pushed back on the idea that LeBron James would not have been a top three player during Larry Bird’s peak in the d’s overlap with Magic Johnson and Michael Jordan should not be used to diminish LeBron’s place in that era.
When Dan Patrick asked what LeBron does better than Bird, Wright pointed to his defensive ability, passing, scoring consistency, efficiency and durability. He even acknowledged that Bird was an underrated passer and a better shooter, but argued that LeBron was the more reliable scorer.
Patrick gave Bird the edge in shooting, rebounding and clutch play, while Wright challenged the claim that Bird was more clutch, citing LeBron’s playoff and regular-season scoring numbers.
The debate reached a turning point when Patrick asked whether LeBron’s defensive peak, including coming close to winning Defensive Player of the Year, should heavily influence the comparison.
