Comparing something unfamiliar with something widely known helps readers understand facts and concepts. This GIJN guide offers references for different types of measurements, plus examples of stories that have used them. It also includes tools, tip sheets, and a bonus quiz!

🛠️ A team at @MarshallProj worked with survivors of the US “troubled teen” industry to create a toolkit that helps fellow survivors find their own records and state oversight reports about their often traumatic treatment. That can be challenging, because many residential youth treatment centers are privately run.

They said dig into procurement records, trade databases, export licenses, corporate filings, and the digital breadcrumbs left behind by the military-tech ecosystem to understand complicity and responsibility in conflict.

✨ “Imagine if we could share skills so that there would be at least a group of capable, connected investigative journalists in every country of the world.”

That was the vision of @nmulvad and @branthouston when they launched the first Global Investigative Journalism Conference years later the legacy of that first gathering and the 13 others since is evident in accountability projects, new regional journalism associations, innovative newsroom approaches, and collaborative strategies around the globe.

To mark the 25th anniversary of the first Global Investigative Journalism Conference, we reached out to a range of speakers and attendees to ask their reflections on the historic event, and on how it affected their careers, and their craft.
