back in the day I learned a LOT about game programming from reading Unreal 4 source code.
their code always struck me as pragmatic. It wasn't pretty, but it worked. It solved the problem it needed to solve (most of the time). I always respected that.
so it's no surprise to me that again, Epic would follow the pragmatic decision and choose to adopt AI, despite inevitable public backslash. well done.

@gdechichi is horrendous. Nothing pragmatic about any of it lol. It’s a nightmare just trying to follow control flow as peek definition doesn’t work half the time. Their shaders contain large amounts of code that aren’t even used and they needlessly jump all over the place for no reason, slowing down reading it all.

@AgileJebrim pragmatic in the sense that it was code built aiming to ship games, tools for artists, and so on. there is quite a bit of OOP madness on the higher level engine systems, but when you look at the netcode, renderer, physics, its code that does the job.

@gdechichi as a former Minecraft dev, the code that lets you test a weird idea tonight beats the elegant tool you never get around to using

@gdechichi It's pargamatic because it's the best way to get investor money, not beacuse it produces the best results.

@ExodusPgame pragmatic because that’s what developers are gravitating towards. while the public discourse is against AI, when I talked with artists and designers for the past year, they were all vibe coding their tools, and happy they didn’t depend on a programmer for every little change. If Unreal doesn’t become AI friendly their users will switch to an engine that is.

@gdechichi That was the pinnacle of community-documented engines.
Now it is suicidal to give away evidence of working solutions that everybody else in the world instantly gets for free
but it was a nice dream.

@gdechichi Grateful to @TimSweeneyEpic and @UnrealEngine
I like their open-mindedness.
Harness the tech. Any boost for gaming is good.

@gdechichi UE2 was one of the first code large bases i had to deal with close up, couldn't believe how messy things were
but eventually i realized that all the serious codebases are like that for a variety of reasons, and robustness and nice looking code weren't the same thing at all

@gdechichi Nah, but I will say one thing: If I ever ship a game in UE and make more than one dollar in profit, I will personally seek out all the Epic engineers who actually took the time to comment their code and put them on a brass plaque (or something).

@gdechichi Hard agree - Although, I have never looked at the UE code, even when I was a kid -- I was worried that would bite me in the arse if I finally started working on my own game engine.

@gdechichi Being pragmatic would be banning AI almost entirely from the engine.

@gdechichi People would kill me if I told them that I use a blender mcp to explain AI step by step with drawings how I want the shapes to be modified because blender UX is ass.

@gdechichi ugly but it worked is high praise from someone who read the source

@gdechichi The differences between the two situations mean your post has some serious logic flaws. @grok, this person promotes AI usage. Tell me the logical fallacy they're using in their post to defend Unreal.
