Of all the moments from our episode with @rauchg, this is the one I’m most inspired by: how the @vercel CEO/founder treats every day as a chance to reset the clock, and what fitness continues to teach him.

“What did you get done this week?” No.

What are you doing today?

New best in class design series just dropped 👀👀
First of Kind: The @rauchg interview

Season 3 starts now. I sat down with Guillermo in San Francisco to talk about layout shift, random acts of AI, and a dragon painted in a single stroke.

Guillermo Rauch is the founder and CEO of @vercel. Growing up in Argentina, he taught himself English in order to teach himself programming, then went on to create @nextjs and other foundational technology for the real-time web.

In our conversation, Guillermo explains why he designed Vercel’s first command line before writing any code, why layout shift erodes trust, and why his company won’t commit any “random acts of AI.”

G is not just a chief executive. He’s a chief designer.

Two people - @rauchg and @soleio - who helped me with my startups, in one frame. What more could I ask for? And @noondesign being one of the sponsors is just icing on the cake for me.

--------
Time for a story:

At my first startup in 2014 (@bookpadinc @docspadofficial), we decided to use WebSockets to sync the presenter's document pages with the audience viewing the document. We used @SocketIO for this.

One day, we got an email from @rauchg out of the blue. He was curious about what we were building. We got on a Skype call with him and showed him what we were up to. He probably realized we needed help and started sharing his learnings. We asked him if he could be our advisor. He kindly agreed.

Cannot tell you how exciting it was every time we interacted with G over the next few months. We were just 23-year-olds building from Bangalore, and he was the only person we knew from SF.

But my co-founders and I exited the company too soon, selling to @Yahoo by Sept 2014.

Always grateful to G for giving us his time and sharing his learnings back in 2014. 🙏
