Hey now, look who just published a paper on a shared GPU cloud built from idle Macs!

@Apple researchers have built Minions, a distributed inference network already used by multiple internal teams to put idle Apple Silicon GPUs to work.

Glad to see the Mothership thinking @HeavyMetalNet thoughts: connect the machines you already have and put their available compute to work.

The paper closes with a clarion call that sounds very familiar: “If idle macOS devices across organizations—or potentially across the global community—can be securely federated, they could form a massive, shared GPU resource pool that benefits the broader ecosystem.”

Rock on! 🤘🏽

Jensen Huang, the CEO of the American technology and chip manufacturer Nvidia, had a close relationship with a Chinese businesswoman who was a spy for China’s Ministry of State Security, according to The New York Times citing a memo circulated last spring among top policymakers tion.

Along with the memo, U.S. intelligence officials believe that the businesswoman, Alice Huang, was recruited to collect intelligence on Jensen Huang, Nvidia’s chief executive, as part of a drive by Beijing’s top spy agency to learn more about American A.I. chips and potentially influence the company to push for its most advanced chips to be made available to China.

“All politics is local”, said former Speaker Tip O’Neill. What if the result of this makes all AI and compute local? @HeavyMetalNet
Ben Thompson: First we were short on compute, but that ramped; now we are short on memory, but that will ramp; we were coming close to being short on power, but that will be rectified. The final constraint is political, and that may be the most imposing constraint of all. Not lve, but it actually interferes with solving the other constraints. Many of the theories about AI assume that it becomes a commodity; I think it’s just as likely we are looking at scarcity for much longer than we expected, which will have ripple effects on everything.

BREAKING: A mystery seller is trying to dump about $500 million in data center loans all at once, per Bloomberg, days after the midterms raised doubts about many projects.

The anonymous seller is auctioning a dozen loans, including a $25 million piece of financing for a huge Stargate site in New Mexico, the joint project of OpenAI, SoftBank and Oracle.

Oracle has already sent that site’s developer a force majeure notice, a legal claim that events beyond its control may excuse it from its obligations.
