one of the most pressing problems of the moment is focus.
you return to your agent sessions in the morning to pick up where they left off. before you know it, you have gone down 5 rabbit holes in 3 days and completely lost track of what the original goal was.
AI will have to help us control AI and keep these sub-threads on a leash. the dopamine of the immediate progress is too strong for our monkey brains to pull our hand out of the jar.
but w the right assistance we can use the machines to help us stay loyal to our own intentions.

i’m becoming incredibly graph pilled lately.
i used to be dismissive of them, not seeing how they were actually useful over RAG or postgres.
but i now see a future where graphs are a central data structure for every company’s world model
are you guys graph pilled yet?

the psychological power of a product (Brand) is a question of degree of internal congruence. it derives its power from the degree to which its visual expression, its language, the name, the statements of its creators, and so on are in alignment.
it achieves its maximum potency when all these horses pull in the same direction. they either cohere into a force that is greater than the sum of the parts, or they work at odds and pull in different directions and rip the thing apart from internal contradictions.
and the force of this coherence is often inherited from the DNA of the founders themselves, via the authenticity and strength of their convictions. Jobs could create an extremely powerful and coherent company because he had a clear sense of values and alignment in himself.

the chat has defined a generation of products in the past four years since the release of chatgpt.
but there is a sense that something is changing. grok bot, muse, dots, instinct, are all the first expressions of a new paradigm. it is clear that we have reached an inflection point.
this next era will be the age of living daemons, an age of ambient intelligence.

i remember earlier this year someone said you would soon rewrite your whole codebase every few months as agents got better.
at the time i thought it was a little farfetched, but now it seems like this really is the fastest way to clean an old codebase - total rewrites

i think you guys already know what i'm about to do

the current chatGPT desktop app is just one big bundle of indecision. when you don't know what you should build, you build everything.
- why is there a chatgpt tab and a codex tab that are basically the same thing?
- why are we putting code review here now too?
- why are plugins not hidden away in the settings?
- why would i need this spaces thing in the same app as the chat?
clear thinking is reflected in a focused product, and that requires decisive choices.
if this app had nothing but chats and folders it would be perfect.

this tendency towards super apps is actually much more of a distribution problem than it is a product problem.
at the product level, small opinionated apps are almost always superior from a UX perspective.
this wonderful primitive that the OS gives us (apps) has been criminally ally bc the browser gave teams a unified dev platform that you could hire for (next.js, react, etc.), and reduce the maintenance burden. that was never a win for the user, but rather for the developer. as a result everyone suffers from browser tab hell. easier dev -> worse UX.
it is quite obvious that finance for example, doesn't belong as a function within the chatgpt app. a separate finance app is the obvious UX choice. the reason, then, that you see the gravity towards integration is rather that it is difficult to make people aware of those other surfaces (distribution problem).
but even having said all of that, the core root cause here is that these companies have weak product teams.
the interaction pattern with chat is extremely simple, since chat makes it straightforward to link out to other apps. an install prompt at the time of action would solve it, e.g. when you need to do something w finances, gpt prompts you to open and install the other app.
anyways, we need more designers to be app-pilled! stop designing for the web app as the primary mode. we are in an age where we should be moving beyond that mistake!

since openai’s roadmap is pretty much entirely driven by x at this point (see ben thompson’s latest excellent piece), here’s what i would’ve done:
i probably would not have created a super app, instead i would’ve created two distinct product surfaces.
yes, i understand the downsides, esp heading toward an ipo, the need to grow codex users etc to prevent anthropic from running away with businesses + compute constraints. but almost every great tech company eventually became a collection of products either through acquisition or by building them. google has like 8 products with 2b+ users. fb has lots too.
the main problem is that trying to turn chatgpt into a super app has created an enormous amount of complexity (which i have written about). not just technically but cognitively. there are so many modes, tools, agents, surfaces, etc that even describing the product to a normal person is getting difficult. like how do you explain dots (which is yet another surface)?
chatgpt = insanely familiar consumer brand
codex = work + enterprise that everyone who mattered knew about
chatgpt agents could’ve become the perfect personal agents with simple, proactive, consumer first daily life things. imagine a daily feed, or proactive stuff that just works instead of having to schedule tasks.
codex agents could’ve become the enterprise agent surface that at deeply integrated into work, tools, browsers, terminals, company context, etc. imagine opening up the codex app & it’s simply ready for getting shit done.
each surface could still have whatever primitives it needed like voice, browser, tools, connectors. the difference is that each product would have one extremely clear job. imagine at dev day you could say 1b active users on chat & 15m codex/business customers in one slide.
then launching new products becomes much easier. you can build highly opinionated interfaces for specific groups of users instead of continuously adding another abstraction into one increasingly complicated app.
& you could still share ~90% of the underlying infrastructure/code. the complexity gets pushed into product boundaries rather than onto the user.
i still really hate that it defaults to work when i want to chat & chat when i want to work.
anyway, just my two cents from completely outside the building.

and it's no wonder, bc why pay for wispr flow when it should be free?
thousands of you freed yourselves from that unnecessary subscription already.
thousands more deserve to do the same, and we are still a long ways from the general tware is now free and abundant.
so today, i'm releasing an app that even your grandmother could install. just drag it into your application folder.
this release also adds:
- multilingual support: for all my global friends out there
- choose your hotkey: fn by default
- faster transcription: up to 20% faster now
as always, completely free.
send to grandma. send to gramps.
let them all enjoy this new freedom from lame subscriptions.
