Weekend hack: HackerTube. I was annoyed with YouTube's recommendations so I had Claude filter down 43M comments over 20 years of HN to 6,454 videos that keep being recommended. *Significantly* better viewing experience, ~2 hours with Opus 5.5:
hackertube.org

- Excellent (state is kept in local browser session)
- Thumbnail is a representative frame from middle of the video instead of the super duper A/B test hyper-optimized user uploads
- Underlying data from the comment analysis as one zip file, point your Claude at it and ask for your own version
- HackerTube Longs ✊

A bit more on the process:
I use Claude Code (desktop app for Mac), Opus 5.5 on Medium effort as my default. I only talk to Claude and have it do everything, the only "manual work" I helped with in tandem was in the browser (reminiscent of MenuGen): 1) I had to create some kind of API key from Google Cloud UI to query YouTube for video metadata, 2) I booted up a VPS box for serving and 3) I bought the domain name. Once the box was up I gave Claude the IP and told it update, secure, harden, deploy and optimize the code, and it did the whole thing.

Many awesome projects that would have normally taken weeks/months even can now be few-shotted for breakfast. What else are we not thinking of.

TIL: binding service on one network interface doesn't prevent from accessing it from other network interface on the same host. Little known security gotcha.
A spooky Linux networking gotcha 👻

You have a dual-homed server on a public and a private network with IP forwarding off. A service is listening on the IP address of the private interface. Can a client in the public network reach it?

2. Good design is useful
3. Good design is elegant
4. Good design is intuitive
5. Good design is cohesive
6. Good design is honest
7. Good design is timeless

FC Augsburg believes it's quite terrible to have 17 other Bundesliga clubs sitting on a bunch of the league's limited supply of points.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman believes people owning RAM is wasteful, and that it belongs in data centers instead.

"From a global allocation perspective, actually, it’s quite terrible to have everyone have a bunch of the world’s limited supply of DRAM sitting in their own computer."

A ‘hello world’ milestone for Project Suncatcher 🚀

After launching our prototype satellite a few weeks ago, we’ve now successfully sent a command up to orbit, booted up the TPU, ran the prompt, and received our first complete response back on earth - a haiku!

I'm looking for someone with a PhD (or decently into one), or 10+ years in systems programming, anywhere in the world Remote allows me to pay, to publish a monthly column for @theconsensusdev selecting and putting a CS research paper in context. $600 per article.

No particular length requirement as long as it's well done. Use AI for whatever you want but you must write by hand and own correctness (I'm checking too of course).

Please pass along.

If you're even remotely interested in technology and engineering, I highly recommend reading this.

There are so many quote-worthy and mind-blowing paragraphs in there.

This one, for example, on ASML and Zeiss:

"The collaboration produced mirrors that are the smoothest man-made objects in the known universe. If you blew one up to the size of the planet, the highest mountain would have the elevation of a face-down playing card."

Or this one, on the progress of chip manufacturing:

"The spell hasn’t been broken. The phone in your pocket is several orders of magnitude more sophisticated than the computers used for the Apollo mission. One AirPod could easily calculate a path to the moon. A car-key fob would suffice. An electric toothbrush. There are Rolls-Royces that we do, in fact, routinely throw away. The Apollo mission’s chips were less powerful than those currently inside a digital pregnancy test. We squander moon-landing capability to display a plus sign."

Or here, on ASML recruiting:

"ASML runs on the belief that if you recruit people who don’t know enough to recognize that the job before them is hopeless, they might surprise you."

It's very good.

The “as a Service” part of SaaS remains underrated.
The exploits of the last few days are a good reminder of why we use SaaS. Our company pays for ~20 SaaS services. If we self-hosted them, we’d now be responsible for all of the security patches this week. Instead, our small monthly bill pays for their teams to handle everything.
