“courage to hate poor people amiright” talking points just don’t hit home for me when white people have had a 60+ year war waged against them. I’ve lived in the poorest white counties and theres great potential but bad policy does actually ruin lives.
If you dig into people’s lives that have financial troubles you’ll find the cloud of chaos. A never ending vortex of interpersonal drama, of jobs lost (never their fault), cheating, low level criminality, substance abuse, injuries etc… if you grew up with these people you know the financial troubles are just another manifestation of their poor choices. If they tripped and fell into 7 figures they stand up in debt.
I think that’s why Caleb gets so much hate. It shows how much of this chaos is self caused. How much of it can’t be fixed with more money. This threatens a lot of assumptions about the root causes of things like criminal justice and welfare.
