Thrilled to join the world-class faculty and community at Optima PCI London 2025 as a Social Media Ambassador!
This year’s theme — “Proactive PCI: Progress Under Pressure” — couldn’t be more timely. It’s all about reducing harmful variability, mastering imaging and physiology, ion-making under the real pressures of modern cath labs.
Looking forward to sharing highlights from deep-dive sessions on calcium, CTO, bifurcation, and LV support — plus incredible live cases from teams led by James Spratt, Carlos Collet, Margaret McEntegart, Colm Hanratty, and Kevin Croce, among many others.
Let’s discuss, learn, and move PCI forward together.

“The #ThirdSector has always been a major social and economic player and if anyone didn’t understand its unique importance and significant value before Covid-19, they should now be in no doubt.
“In those extraordinary times, the organisations and volunteers of the third sector forward to ensure those most in need were supported. Whether it was organising food for families, access to vital medicines or mental wellbeing support. In addition to e-mail or phone support from active volunteers, community-based organisations used innovative digital media to connect people and to organise activities.
“They developed digital neighbourhood platforms, meeting points and created new online resources and collective activities. All of this required true innovation to ensure delivery at pace and importantly it also truly focussed on the needs of the community because they were properly in tune with that hyper local need.
“The pandemic and later cost of living crisis brought the third sector more into public consciousness with greater understanding of how that ecosystem of support has been and remains an absolute necessity for everyday lives within our communities.
“Communities are often excluded from fast moving innovation processes. The ability to engage with and challenge dominant innovation regimes is fundamental for community agency and at present working-class communities are often excluded from these innovation processes.
“When lockdown happened myself and colleagues from public engagement reached out to communities close to Queen's campus, one being ‘the Market’ in the inner city. We wanted to support anything we could, knowing communities were in crisis.
“The @MDABelfast had fortuitously noted a desire to build an academic partnership with Queen's in their development plan to advance work they had already commenced mapping need and capacity in their community. After a few meetings, and in a relatively short time it was clear that our relationship with the community was going strong, when we managed to attract the support of @communitiesni, as well as from within QUB, we were up and running and over the past 2 and a half years have co-produced and stood up a robust, and needs led, programme in true partnership with the community.
“A crucial component to our work within Queen's Communities and Place is that we work in genuine partnership. We recognise that communities are not just places for academics to use as sites of learning they are vibrant sources of ideas and capacity in their own right. They are the problem owners and know best how to address these challenges and with the partnership of a university behind them are much more empowered to help themselves for the longer term and in sustainable ways.
“I hope that our work continues to benefit the communities we are partnered with and also grows authentically into new communities. That our model develops into and is recognised as an exemplar for engaged research.
“Most of all that we continue to be relevant and impactful for communities and use our privileged position within an anchor institution such as Queen’s to support and promote what’s important to communities with policy makers and civic society, based on the evidence from our research.”
Professor Kathryn Higgins (PhD) is founder and Director of @QUBCommunities1, a cross institutional initiative based on partnership between communities, policymakers and academics.
She will be exploring the topic of “#Voluntary, #Community and #SocialEnterprise – Innovating for Social Change” on Day 3 of next week's Global Innovation Summit right here at Queen's University.

@EuroInterventio That's not how BASE works - the balloon is inflated as the polymer wire is "forced" into the SIS - the balloon also increases the penetration forceinflated
