Newsflash, @sama, we're all aware that there's very little chance of you not selling or loosing the data given to you in chat, especially if those chats include valuable and privileged information. Local AI fixes that problem.
sam: local inference is a terrible allocation of scarce resources

β€œa lot of people want local inference, and somehow they assume that the problem is solved now because we have open-source models, we're going to be able to run them on our computers, and so we're not going to need ta centre

but from a global allocation perspective, actually it's quite terrible to have everybody, like, have a bunch of the world's limited supply of DRAM sitting in their own computer and being used five percent of the time

you want maximum utilisation in the cloud if you're trying to deal with this very supply-constrained environment

somehow many people's intuition is the opposite of that”

A very interesting advert by the ANC. Very well done.
Every generation adds a new chapter to our story. From the struggle for freedom to the work of building better communities, the journey continues.

The future calls on all of us to play our part. Together, let’s keep moving forward and build better communities.

The public pays for that info, so really you should be just laying it all out for us.
A Deputy Minister (Dr. Jack Bloom) is abusing his privileged status in government by using government information to promote narrow party interests. We are honestly in big trouble with this party, the DA. They then call any coalition without them chaotic when they are the masters of chaos!

People don't realise that Sagan was concerned about the very near term when writing DHW, and his final interview while terminal. The GOP was already embracing a style of deluded thinking that defied reason and logic, and instead wanted to return to a natural state of things.
Holy fucking shit

All electric "dry brakes" are here and will be appearing on many new cars in the future.
Fully dry, electro-mechanical systems (such as Brembo's Sensify and upcoming tech from ZF and Tesla) have entered production, signaling a shift away from the traditional hydraulic systems.
here is no mechanical or fluid connection from the brake pedal to the wheels, only wires going to electrically actuated calipers.
Traditional hydraulic fluid, master cylinders, and brake lines are completely eliminated. Instead, braking commands are sent electronically via software to independent electric motors mounted at each wheel caliper.
Some benefits include no more brake fluid flushes, master cylinder leaks, vapor lock, and corrosion from hygroscopic brake fluid and possible faster brake response time.
But many have worries about reliability concerns over complete reliance on software and wiring. Because there is no hydraulic backup if electrical power is completely lost, these systems require redundant power supplies, backup batteries, or localized capacitors to ensure safe stops.
What are your thoughts on this?
As a technician I have concerns, one of them being increased repairs costs for the car owner.

@FrankBr05713205 The very obvious downside is that this will lead to serialised parts. You won't be able to replace your own brakes with cheaper or better ones from a third party.

City of Cape town @CityofCT sent out new electricity tarrifs

cityofcapetown.evlink19.net/servlet/link/2…

Look how deceptive the time of use tarrif is. Lowest cost is off peak @ R3.01 vs R3.56 /kWh on home use block 1.

Sounds good, right?

NO! The R3.56 is VAT incl, the R3.01 is VAT excl. 😑
o lowest off-peak is actually R3.46, only 10c cheaper than home use block 1.

Who in their right mind would opt for time of use tarrifs?

Also no mention of what the new export tarrif will be for SSEG customers with AMI

@geordinhl is this what you want us to vote for?

@PalesaM_Photo_ The pre-owned units through places like Cash Crusaders or Bobshop are an option (buyer protections). The original run units may need a new coat of liquid metal TIM (or a switch to PTM7950), and there are repair/refurb services that will do this for you.

@PalesaM_Photo_ With controllers being nearly R2k, buying second-hand is also a good option. If you're worried about stick drift, it is possible to replace the controllers with hall effect sticks. xmods.co.za will even do the swap for you (they are heat sensitive).

The correct course of action is to use the vulnerability to hack back into TEMP-PHP-2014 and take control of it, obviously.
Security called me at 6:12 AM today.

"Patch every PHP server immediately."

I asked what happened.

"Two critical vulnerabilities. Remote code execution. No authentication required."

Cool.

How many PHP servers do we have?

According to inventory: 12

According to reality:

Nobody knows.

We found one running WordPress.

Three running old internal tools.

One under someone's desk.

Two inside vendor appliances.

A forgotten employee directory from 2016.

And a server named:

PHP-OLD-DO-NOT-TOUCH

Naturally, that one runs payroll exports.

Then we found a PHP 5.6 box.

I asked who owned it.

The documentation said:

BRIAN.

Brian left in 2019.

We called Brian.

He said:

"Oh wow, that's still running?"

Excellent.

By 8 AM, leadership joined the incident call.

CEO:

"Can hackers actually get in?"

Security:

"Potentially yes."

CEO:

"Without a password?"

Security:

"Yes."

CEO:

"Then why do WE need passwords?"

Not the lesson.

Finance asked if we could wait until the weekend to patch because downtime affects revenue.

Security explained that the alternative was letting strangers execute code on our servers.

Finance asked for a cost comparison.

At 9:17, someone suggested temporarily taking the vulnerable websites offline.

Marketing refused.

"Our campaign is live."

So for the next hour, the company officially decided maintaining a landing page for 20% off webinar registration was more important than preventing remote server takeover.

We finally patched everything we could find.

Then our scanner discovered another PHP server.

Hostname:

TEMP-PHP-2014

Uptime:

4,512 days.

Nobody knows what it does.

Nobody owns it.

Nobody can shut it down.

But every time we block network access, the warehouse stops printing shipping labels.

Security has classified it as critical infrastructure.

It is running PHP 5.4.

The vulnerability has existed longer than half our employees.

The emergency patch took four hours.

Finding out what PHP actually runs took eleven.

The internet isn't held together with code.

It's held together with servers everyone is afraid to turn off.
