@bunjavascript Why are you doing the type checker, linter, and formatter as 3 separate commands?

@bunjavascript also add `bun lint --branch` and `bun fmt --branch` please

@bunjavascript You shouldn’t have to manually create the hook. There should be a way to install the hook and maybe a console log if you don’t have it setup.

@bunjavascript how does this handle a partially staged file? curious whether formatting preserves the unstaged hunks.

@bunjavascript cutting the node startup overhead for lint-staged is the big win here. does bun actually respect partially staged hunks, or does it just run against the whole file?

@bunjavascript Will Bin natively support gRPC and the buffer protocol in the future? (Since http2 is fully supported). Would be amazing to use this natively without installing the required third-party dependencies

@bunjavascript Don't you think you might be hurting adoption integrating so many features into bun?
Every feature bun ships means one more vendor lock, i kmow integration has many advantages but a good balance would be nice

@bunjavascript Any idea on how you will integrate bun workspaces on it @jarredsumner ? Also since you are working on these threads.. maybe features to improve monorepo/dependency mangement and caching? Such as turborepo?

@bunjavascript the best part is one less config file to babysit in every repo. pre-commit hooks quietly got a lot simpler.

@bunjavascript at this rate package.json's going to fit on a Post-it

@bunjavascript .git/hooks isn't committed though, so every teammate has to add the hook by hand. any plan for bun to set core.hooksPath on install, or is husky still the way to share it

@bunjavascript The full toolchain moment, we actually went deeper on how bun lint, bun fmt, and bun check work together here x.com/AGTPinsights/s…
Bun just announced a built-in linter, bun lint, for its next version. Here's what you need to know.
bun lint is an ESLint-compatible linter that Bun says is 26x faster than ESLint. It ships with over 1,000 builtin rules (the docs count 1,021) and reads both ESLint and oxlint there's nothing to install and nothing to configure. It also supports ESLint plugins, for large production apps that need many custom rules.
Under the hood, it builds on TypeScript's parser and type checker ported to Rust, the same parser and AST that powers bun check. Rules are ported from oxlint (unicorn, jest, vitest, jsx-a11y, next, promise) and from ESLint, typescript-eslint, eslint-plugin-react, -import and -react-hooks. Type-aware rules are included. Bun merged the PR (#44805) on Oct 12.
Bun also announced bun lint --staged, a builtin alternative to lint-staged. Jarred Sumner says you can run bun fmt --staged && bun lint --staged.
This completes a toolchain. bun fmt, announced Oct 13, is a Prettier alternative that's 320x faster, passes 99% of Prettier's test suite and supports 20 languages. bun check, announced Oct 7, is a TypeScript type checker written in Rust.
Sumner says a year ago he would have called a linter, formatter and type checker too ambitious for Bun. He says ahead-of-time compiled TypeScript needs integrated tooling to have a shot at being widely used.
Reactions are split. Many developers are excited and want it now. Christoph Nakazawa pointed out that Oxlint, from VoidZero, is already 50-100x faster than ESLint, and joked that Bun copied VoidZero using Claude. Others asked how much of the 26x speedup holds up with heavy ESLint plugins loaded. Biome, which is about 25x faster than ESLint, is another option.
Key numbers:
- 26x faster than ESLint, per Bun
- 1,000+ builtin rules
- bun fmt: 320x faster than Prettier, 99% of its tests, 20 languages
- Oxlint: 50-100x faster than ESLint
The linter lands in the next Bun release, with no date announced yet.

![Graphic for bun fmt and bun lint --staged. Format and lint only what you're committing. One line in a git hook, nothing to install. Step 1, create this file: .git/hooks/pre-commit, a plain text file made executable with chmod +x, containing "#!/bin/sh" and "bun fmt --staged && bun lint --staged". Step 2, commit: a terminal runs git commit -m "add cart". bun fmt prints "src/cart.ts" and "Formatted 1 file, 0 unchanged [8.10ms]", with a sticker reading "re-staged". bun lint then prints a code frame pointing at a debugger statement in src/cart.ts line 2, "error: Unexpected 'debugger' statement. no-debugger", "1 problem (1 error, 0 warnings)" and "Linted 1 file [7.94ms]". A stamp reads "commit blocked".](/pic/media%2FHUrPzjragAAAruk.jpg)
