A non-surgical procedure that temporarily blocks excess blood vessels in the knee is delivering lasting pain relief for osteoarthritis patients — and 80% of participants in a new clinical study reported significant reductions in knee pain that held for at least a full year.

The ular artery embolization (GAE), uses microscopic gelatin particles to clog unnecessary blood vessels that grow around arthritic knees, fueling inflammation and irritating nerves.

Researchers say GAE could fill a critical gap for millions of adults whose pain medications and steroid injections have stopped working but who aren't ready — or eligible — for a total knee replacement.
