“My heart leapt!”

Miss Hester Marguerite Sorel-Cameron, later Dick-Lauder, was a Foreign Office Civilian who worked at Bletchley Park from 1941 to 1944.

Initially based in Hut 6, Hester later moved to Hut 8, where she worked to break codes by comparing messages.

“On one emember doing just that and broke it myself!”

Hester recalled the importance of the work, despite its often laborious nature, and how staff were instructed to describe their jobs simply as working for “a branch of the Foreign Office”.

In 1944, Hester left Bletchley Park to become a driver for the Red Cross in Edinburgh.

“Anything but quiet!”

Miss Jean Kerslake, later Kerlogue, was a Foreign Office Civilian who worked at Bletchley Park from 1942 to 1945.

Jean initially helped identify weaknesses in Enigma coding before moving into traffic analysis in Hut 6.

“I moved into the ‘Quiet Room’ in ng but quiet! I worked permanent days, 9 am to 6 pm, on traffic identification research. The work itself was pretty monotonous, but not really routine as we were working on message traffic that was difficult to identify.”

Despite the demanding nature of the work, Jean remembered the people around her fondly:

“It was fairly demanding work but the company was good.”

After the war, Jean taught English in Switzerland and Malaysia before returning to Sussex with her family.

In support of @WorldSpaceWeek, National Radio Centre volunteers delivered a series of exclusive talks for Bletchley Park visitors, exploring satellites, their different orbits and the vital role they play in modern communications.

Visitors enjoyed practical demonstrations io operators use satellites for space communication, as well as how satellites, including the International Space Station, can be tracked and monitored using simple radio equipment or even a home computer with an internet connection.

Over three days, more than 150 people attended the talks, with many leaving inspired to continue exploring the world of space communications. Visitors were encouraged to tune in via the ARISS (Amateur Radio on the International Space Station) website and listen to astronauts making live radio contact with students at Wick High School in Scotland.
