Wayland users, your windows may finally stop forgetting where they live.

On X11, apps reopening exactly where you left them was just normal. On Plasma Wayland it has been a years-long sore spot. KDE contributor WoodJudge has posted a proof-of-concept patch for plasma-integration ary app restarts.

How it works: KWin and Qt 6.12 already speak a Wayland protocol for restoring window state. The patch saves each app's session ID on close and hands it back to Qt on the next launch, and it survives reboots. It's still a draft, it needs private Qt APIs, and it restores placement only, not your open documents.

WoodJudge: "This is probably the thing about X11 that I miss the most now that Plasma no longer supports Xorg."

Over on Fedora's forum, AlexVal said "the issue is years old now… It is difficult to understand why the remaining problems of the X11->Wayland are so sticky." Barry A Scott replied that full session restore is planned for Plasma 6.9 in February 2027.
