@stevenstrogatz "Pure math is a branch of applied math" is usually attributed to the great Joe Keller. There is an interview with him (or maybe with Peter Lax) where he explains why he personally says it.

@b82202 @retardrutidee@esrtweet his US citizenship exam, Gödel found an "inner contradiction" in the Constitution that he believed could legally turn the US into a dictatorship. He nearly explained it to the judge (Einstein and Morgenstern were with him and panicked), but the judge cut him off. The exact flaw remains unknown and is still called Gödel's Loophole.

"Terence Tao, you dumbshit" is not a judgment I would have ever thought possible before a few months ago.

Tao complains "AI is generating terrible proofs: great results, but no care for elegance, for who understands them, or for what comes next".

You've just described what you are supposed to do as a human being, fool. It's not the chisel's job to make a sculpture look beautiful; those choices belong to the mind and hand of the sculptor.

I've been writing software for 50 years. If I, a crusty old fart from the days of punched cards, can accept that I will never write a significant amount of code by hand again - that my job is steering and quality-checking an AI now - then what is *your* excuse for mental inflexibility, golden genius boy?

I'm pretty sure that if AIs actually had enough mathematical taste to be consistently elegant, and then were good enough at explanations to make their proof accessible, which is what you say you want...

...you'd be bitching harder, because you'd be entirely obsolete.

Quit your whining, you spoiled primadonna. Go do your job.

This feels like a parody, like some rage bait extracted from TikTok to make men and women hate each other.

Then you realize this is the most popular female podcast on the internet. Millions would watch this even if it wasn’t clipped for internet rage bait.
"Call Her Daddy" host Alex Cooper & actress Sophia Bush: if a woman is questioning whether she can do better than her current husband, "the answer is always yes."

"This idea that it's too late or you're too old, or who are you to want more, that's patriarchy. That is crazy."

@maenadraving Our puritan society resists the truth, but here it is: men are more sensitive than women.
Men fall in love so easily it becomes a point of pride to resist it.

France is a Thermonuclear Democracy with a permanent seat on the UN Security Council. As is the UK.

Think. Do the math.

The pathological weakness of France must always be very much our business.

I am sorry to say this. I wish it were otherwise.
Could it happen here? ‘France is a warning that our civilisation is not immortal.’ My column in this week’s @spectator spectator.com/article/france…

This mere disorder is used as a tool by the abettors, patrons, and sympathizers of these organizations, without which they could not exist, to pretend they don’t exist.

@hshgsreborn Alienation exists on so many levels that it’s honestly pointless to even discuss it. You’d need a perfect society that allocates humans into little segregated culture states to even begin to fix things. Right now we just have influencers who try to wrangle as best they can.

You can see this same problem in the Malfoid discourse where Hary’s main rival Draco Malfoy is replaced by a female rival who eventually becomes Harry’s final romantic interest (Dracia Malfoy).

The reason why “Malfoid” works so well is that it patches a major flaw Rowling built o and House Slytherin. Ultimately, Rowling could never decide what to “do” with the Slytherin. This group is the designated rivals of Harry, and Rowling knows that she doesn’t like them and what they represent which makes their competitions with Harry “mean” something.

However, Rowling doesn’t know what to do with this group after the giant battle between good and evil. Are the Slytherin evil doers? Or are they misguided rivals? The author isn’t comfortable with either option. It would feel cruel for Malfoy just to be “evil” and have Harry kill him. Still, Rowling disapproves of Malfoy’s ideas so strongly she can’t give the character a redemption so that he becomes a full ally and friend. Instead Rowling just has Malfoy slither away, and then return later as an obviously defeated and castrated version of himself with no pride or fire.

Of course this is terribly unsatisfying. Malfoy and the Slytherin have no clear remaining purpose, they are robbed of their core vitality. Their new role in the post Voldemort world is to be default losers so that the other “good” houses can feel better about themselves, which again is just more effeminate humiliation. There is no way, in the new world, that Slytherin could win and not totally subvert the reigning political order. But this breaks their purpose because, to work, Slytherin and Malfoy need to be honorable rivals, but the author doesn’t know how to write that because she doesn’t understand honorable male rivalry.

This is why replacing Draco Malfoy with Dracia Malfoid fixes almost everything. The marriage of Harry to the Scion of Slytherin resolves conflict through the magic of sex, where the secondary party submits to the primary winner but in the process becomes an equal stakeholder in the future. There is no shame now in being Slytherin as their virtues of loyalty and purity are brought to the political table just as “Malfoid” brings them to the wedding bed. They maintain their fiery pride in defeat just as Malfoid maintains her spirit as a wife. Yes, in this generation Gryfindor is leading the dance. But nothing is stopping the next turn from going in Slytherins direction, they are equals in their opposition just as Harry’s children would equally share their mother’s heritage.

Again the irony here is that Rowling, like most women, can only understand honorable submission and defeat in the context of sex (this is why women read male rivalry as an extension of homosexuality eg “Heated Rivalry”) so she can’t write male Malfoy with a satisfying ending. Fixing male Malfoy would require a totally character re-write whereas replacing him with a woman just requires some tweaks to make the story perfect.
When I say that women lack the concept of an honorable enemy, this is what I’m talking about.

Obviously a lot of the Democrats’ new vindictiveness is Trump derangement, but the Great Feminization is part of the story, too.

Men understand that the other guy is a professional just like me, and we should have an open fight by fair rules and both go home at the end of the day.

For women, conflict isn’t over until the other side is gone and they never have to talk to them again.

Men believe in hierarchy, so a fight is about establishing dominance within the hierarchy and making the other guy subordinate.

Women don’t, everything is egalitarian and consensus-driven, so if you do get conflict, the only possible outcome is total exclusion from the group.

It makes sense that the Democratic Party is abandoning old-fashioned ideas about honorable conflict as it becomes more dominated by women.

A lot of shit we are dealing with in the modern computer systems is an adversarial complexity that serves no purpose except making things harder for the benefit of the system's owners. The main problem is that lot of people believe this complexity is necessary.
