Women make up 57% of the U.S. workforce, yet hold only 26% of computing jobs. On Ada Lovelace Day, we celebrate the legacy of the world’s first computer programmer and recognize the women who continue to shape the future of technology.

From pioneering new discoveries to leading innovation in every field, women in tech are driving progress and expanding what’s possible. Honoring Ada’s story reminds us that the next generation of innovators should see themselves reflected in the future of technology.

Trusted Future’s own Admiral Michael Rogers (ret) and Ieva Ilves were in Ukraine this week taking part in the IT Arena Conference. Ukraine stands as a model for a results-driven approach to cyber security and resilience. The country has defended its networks against a constant proving to be resilient even after years of war. This should serve as a model for other countries.

Out today is a very exciting new resource for families in today's digital world: The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) Family Media Plan. A joint project from Apple and AAP, this resource helps families talk through and create healthy digital habits that balance screen time with sleep, exercise, schoolwork, and time with friends and family. In addition to this being a great resource for families, it is also a great example of industry and public interest groups working together to help build a more trusted digital ecosystem for kids and families.

We have warned about the problematic consequences of mandated interoperability because it undermines essential safeguards, putting fundamental consumer privacy, safety, and security at risk. The Australian Senate is currently seeking to rush through a proposal that could undermine the security of every Australian.

Last month, as Canadian regulators looked at the privacy impacts of age assurance mandates, we warned that “government-ID and other document-based verification methods also create concentrated repositories of highly sensitive personal information that can be the target of data breaches.”

@briankrebs is now reporting that the FBI began investigating a new dark web service that began selling digital scans of more than 153 million drivers licenses (and other forms of identification) from people in Canada and the United States – the Krebs report says the identity theft service that was launched on the dark web "appears to be siphoning images collected by a widely-used identification verification company."   Increasingly it’s no longer a question of if the sensitive data will be breached, but when.

What if, in trying to help app developers, regulators unintentionally make their work harder and more complex? As regulators drive distinct app marketplace business terms that work differently between jurisdictions, regulators seem to be overlooking the impact that a divergent and increasingly fragmented set of marketplace terms and rules has on small and medium sized developers.  We take a look an important step forward in the EU toward more regulatory stability and uniformity under its Digital Markets Act (DMA) as well as the UK’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) that could undermine these gains by creating another layer of complexity for developers:

Today the New York Times is reporting that a leading Anthropic AI model was able to find flaws and ways to attack a weakened version of the Advanced Encryption Standard aka AES – a digital encryption standard that is in pervasive use throughout the internet – making an assault 200 to 1,000 times faster than what previous human research had managed to do. At a time when encryption has become one of the most powerful tools we have for protecting personal privacy, safety and security, new AI breakthroughs aren’t just major technological leaps they are a wakeup call that should make us rethink how we can better protect our systems and data.  nytimes.com/2026/07/28/us/…

While we need to continue the drive to make strong encryption more ubiquitous throughout our digital ecosystem, encryption’s Y2K-moment could be coming earlier than we expected and we need to be better prepared. With advances in quantum computing creeping closer every day, major companies and the government are now dramatically shortening their readiness deadlines for the arrival of Q Day, the point at which existing quantum computers can break public-key cryptography algorithms that secure decades’ worth of secrets belonging to militaries, banks, governments, and nearly every individual on earth.  Recent advances are pushing us closer to a Q-Day danger zone.  Earlier this year, both Google and Cloudflare bumped up their internal deadline for PQC (post-quantum cryptography) readiness to 2029. Apple announced it open-sourced its already deployed quantum-resistant encryption with the hope that it can be more broadly adopted throughout the world.  In June, federal government agencies were directed to migrate to post‑quantum cryptography by Dec. 31, 2031 -- an essential step in protecting sensitive data from future quantum‑enabled attacks capable of breaking today’s encryption. A governmentwide and industry-wide acceleration is necessary given the stakes and the difficulty of the work required to be ready.

As we look over the horizon at the digital future and the steps we need to make that future a more trusted future, making encryption more ubiquitous, and accelerating our transition to post-quantum encryption are near the top of the list.

A new research paper on End-To-End Encryption (E2EE) found that the technology is now increasingly ubiquitous and integrated throughout the entire technology stack providing critical privacy and security protections. However, the researchers warn that "new government claims for restricting effective encryption deserve great skepticism." They reveal a substantial gap between the assumption that E2EE categorically blocks lawful access and the reality of how communications are sent and received. They conclude that any law broadly limiting E2EE would “thus have severe serious consequences for cybersecurity, commerce, and government operations.” It something that Canadian Senators should pay close attention to as they consider their Lawful Access Bill C-22 which threatens the use of E2EE. papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cf…

Encryption has now emerged as a core enabler of trust in technologies we rely on every day. Strong encryption protects our data on our devices, in our messages, and in the cloud and helps foster the trust people need that their information is private, and their data secured.
But Canada’s Lawful Access bill C-22 forces companies to build encryption backdoors into their services jeopardizing Canada’s digital security, privacy, and safety on and offline.

As we have explained on many occasions, there is simply no way to create backdoor access to encrypted data and communications, without compromising the privacy and security of millions of law-abiding citizens.  In this moment of accelerating technological change, when AI is collapsing the timeline from vulnerability discovery to exploitation from months to mere hours, we need to be making encryption more ubiquitous and strengthen trust online, not weaken it.

A new analysis of the DMA’s smartphone AI rules reports that “What the EC is dictating to Google is just breathtaking in scope.” …  “the EC is demanding that third-party AI assistants be enabled to become part of the system software, not just apps.” … “The European Commission obviously thinks it is their place to design operating systems.” … “This is a recipe for disaster”… under one possible scenario, they analysis expects “Unintended results include massive privacy violations where third-party assistants exfiltrate on-device data to the cloud, Meta uses on-device third-party data for the targeting of ads, and users who take advantage of these third-party assistants see [a major degradation in device performance]  #DMAFail

These risks have become so obvious and urgent that even the @USTradeRep warned yesterday that the EU’s DMA AI smartphone rules “pose serious risks for the privacy and security of users.”

Our latest report explains why, as these superhacking AI models get more advanced, we need smarter policy approaches to foster a more secure operating system environment, not the kind of untested regulatory approach in the EU that weaken operating system safeguards right at the time we need them most. trustedfuture.org/trust-endanger…

Europe now faces a privacy paradox. “Anonymous search queries need audits, screening, and a security cordon. Your messages, microphone, and screen can make do with a checkbox. That is the logic running through two decisions the @EU_Commission adopted last week involving the same company, under the same law, on the same day. Yet read side by side, they seem to come from different legal universes."

@AuerDirk, of the @LawEconCenter lays out this case in a provocative, insightful and thoughtful new piece in Truth on the Market.

@EU_Commissioncing a walled garden for search data, an open door for your digital device data. Our new Trusted Future report explains the problem with the European rules approach to making a checkbox your security system: The DMA’s smartphone rule’s “premise is that as long as a user taps “Allow” on a pop-up screen, it is acceptable to give a third-party app continuous access to their ambient audio, app data, real-time screen contents, and cross-app control.”

This isn’t a security strategy; it’s a complete abdication of security and privacy protection responsibility. To address the digital disconnect, we make pragmatic recommendation for what Europe needs to do to rectify the problem.  #DMAFail
