Out on a frozen lake in Canada, an upside-down cell tower is collecting data on the local fish population. The device is called Echo, and it’s just the beginning of what Dominion Dynamics hopes to build for the country’s growing defense industry.

(Video episode here on YouTube - youtube.com/watch?v=e9eORC…)

Our northern brothers have been agitated to the point of action, thanks to President Trump declaring that they’re nasty people we should perhaps conquer. Threatening Canada is not unlike kicking a puppy, but it turned out to be the final straw. The country counted its beans and concluded the situation was loony — 70 cents of every dollar Canada spends on military hardware goes to American companies. Realizations like these pushed Dominion founder Eliot Pence to move back home after 20 years in the States and get to work on renewing Canada’s awesomeness.

“I want to compete with Lockheed, with Anduril, with Northrop,” Pence told me. “I want to put Canada and Canadian defense back on the global map. That’s the ambition, and we can do it.”

Before Dominion, Pence spent four years at Anduril as one of its earliest business hires. The lessons he gleaned from that experience are what he hopes to return to Canada, which has a maddening history of building world-class defense technology and immediately tossing it in the trash. “We’re trying to change history here and build back what Canada was,” Pence said.

Since its founding in June 2025, Dominion has raised $169M CAD, reportedly at a $570M CAD valuation. They’ve been hard at work on all sorts of cool gadgets like Echo, which is meant to find adversary submarines under the ice, plus a communications network called AuraNe, and an unmanned drone that flies alongside fighter jets called Scout.

In the latest episode of our Canada series, we spent some time with Pence to figure out why Canada would even need a robust defense industry. We got a tour of Dominion’s new factory, which will likely never make a camera appearance again because, ya know, top secret defense stuff. We took a skidoo across the lake to see the tech in action and bribe a local fisherman with beer. I almost kiss a pike and jig like my life depends on it. If you aren’t Canada-pilled by the end of this video, perhaps there is no hope left for you.

Funny to see Indian VCs scrambling to voice their deeptech bets after @ashleevance laid out ground truths.

If you peel the layers of some orgs mentioned, it's laughable what is considered "deeptech"

Sidenote: how many Indian VCs have invested more than $10mil in deeptech? 🤭🤷

Great article! At age 10, Belosic had a bandsaw birthday party building Pinewood Derby cars. Later turned an old Honda Accord into a Teslonda (Tesla drivetrain). In 2018 bought a $750k laser cutter on credit for hobbies. Now produces 50 million parts a year.

Since Vivek is in the news again, I am forced to re-up my investigation into his tennis claims. TLDR, the only source for him being a nationally ranked player is him, and the press just repeats it without looking into it. Also, I'm aware that no one cares about this but me
K, I've watched several videos of @VivekGRamaswamy playing tennis. He's for sure decent. I, however, do not believe for a minute that he was a "nationally ranked junior" as so many stories state. I can't even find an Ohio ranking, although he looks good enough to make it here.

Also, if he were nationally ranked, he would 100 percent have played at Harvard

God those teams were fun. Most SF group of weirdo players ever
On this date in 2012, Pablo Sandoval became the 4th player in MLB history to hit 3 HR in a single World Series game. He joined Babe Ruth, Reggie Jackson, and Albert Pujols as the only players to do so. 💥

Sandoval would go on to win World Series MVP hitting .500 in the Giants 4 game sweep of the Tigers. 🏆 x.com/MLB/status/171…

SendCutSend went from a hobby to making 50 million metal parts per year. It just raised another $140 million to keep expanding.

I spent a couple of days with its founder @jimbelosic at the Reno headquarters and factories and his childhood home. Big ole story on what I discovered co/YUsJpJywkV

Spend my days hunting for the most compelling tech people. Time and again, they come from the University of Waterloo and its Socratica society (@socraticainfo) in particular.

We went to check out Waterloo and Socratica to try and find the magic. Full episode here - youtube.com/watch?v=vw2fve…
