The alpha for application layer AI companies has always been in figuring out the right shape of the product that makes tokens incredibly valuable in each domain.

Really enjoyed this conversation with the @AnthropicAI team + @WisprFlow @pendoio founders on the future of building agents and how it's getting easier and faster to just focus on the product and take concepts from prototype to production!
We sat down with the founders of @WisprFlow, @useactively, and @pendoio, who are building on Claude Managed Agents.

Learn how they used features like outcomes, sandboxing, and memory to scale their products.

I try to invest in founders & companies that aspire to build *decisively* the best product, technology in their space (as opposed to as much emphasis on sales or marketing).

One of my favorite moments that always happens when those types of companies starts winning...

Part 1:
Founder: "We lost a deal to competitor X, we're bummed"
Me: "I'm not worried about it at all"
Founder: "????"
Me: "I think people trying/using X is probably some of our best sales/marketing. Our stuff is better, keep doing the right things, and customers will come around and will appreciate us even more than they would otherwise"

Part 2 (4 months later):
Founder: "I have exciting news :) [customer] is back on the table for another trial. And the reason is because [competitor] is janky."

My favorite part about these isn't that I turned out to be right, or even that the company is tactically doing well... it's that the founder jumps to a new level of self-confidence about themselves, their company strategy and tactics, and the value of longer-term thinking

@emollickderrated point. You basically state this, but to underscore it: for most knowledge work other than code, the digital output is often an intermediary step in the value creation process. Comparatively, for code automation, it's literally is the equivalent of automating on the production line in manufacturing.

But for most other areas of knowledge work, there's still a ton of real-world interaction for the ultimate value creation to occur. For a sales rep, automation gets them to the next stage in a sales cycle faster, but they still need to meet with the prospects and customers and have a compelling message and presence; in legal, the value is created only once the client and counterparty agree on deal terms after lots of back and forth; in life sciences, only when in real life medical trials and the drug works did the automation matter, etc.

The main implication here is just that diffusion will be different than many anticipate because they're looking at coding as the proxy. One huge positive point here is that it's one of the reasons we're not going to be in the doomer timeline.

Domains with clear overarching goals benefit in an outsized way as models get better at loops. (And there aren't that many... what's the goal in legal?)

This has been one of our core theses at @useactively: obvious goal in GTM (progress accounts down the funnel) = the ultimate loop (per-account agent with /goal to progress account) that improves with model quality.
With Fable 5, I've personally moved on to responsibilities or "loops".

I no longer tell Claude to investigate a particular crash report. It runs in a loop, watching every crash report that comes in. Its job is no longer to help me fix a crash, it's to keep our apps from crashing.

@charliermarsh Sometimes they're a good reason to work on something. When people say a market is "crowded," what that often means is that there's a real problem and none of the solutions are good enough yet.

CEOs are uniquely prone to AI psychosis because they’re sufficiently distant from the last mile of work that still has to happen to generate most value with AI.

So when they play with AI, they see the happy path results, often not considering the next 10 or 20 things that have to happen to get sustainable results from agents.

“Look I made this awesome product prototype”. Yes but you didn’t have to review the code before it went into production and fix a bunch of issues.

“Look I generated a contract”. Yes but you didn’t verify all the terms before it goes out to the counterparty and didn’t have to wire up all the past contracts to work with.

The best thing you can do as a CEO is to use AI a *ton* to figure out the real implications of agents in the enterprise, and come out the other side with an appreciation for both the upside and the real work that goes into them.
CEOs are the most delusional about AI. Detached from reality.

On the backs of our recent Series B announcement, I joined @tbpn to talk about @useactively 's obsession with building agents that actually move metrics and deliver outcomes for enterprise GTM orgs.

Thanks to @jordihays @johncoogan @Jacksonfordyce for having me on to talk revenue orgs that run on Per-Account Agents!

@sequoia presented this in the context of coding but it will apply to many domains beyond that - especially ones with clear units of multiplicative scale out and long-horizon goals that agents can work towards (like sales!).

The future is thousands of agents per human!
Great slide from @Sequoia's most recent AI Ascent Keynote. They're right - it's the year of the background agent. While the rest of Silicon Valley is just now catching on, we at @Cognition literally invented this 2+ years ago. "Call your shot", as the kids say.

Most sales tools get purchased by leadership and never fully adopted by the team.

Actively is changing that: they replaced the entire stack with one persistent AI agent per account, working your entire TAM 24/7.

BCV partner Ajay Agarwal was skeptical at first too, until he saw arimella had created.

Full conversation below. 👇

“You can’t fix a human capacity problem with tools that weigh on humans.”

Actively was one of the first to take that problem seriously. When two dozen AEs showed up to their customer’s SKO just to say thanks, co-founder and CEO, Mihir Garimella, knew they were onto something.

@p0 has become critical infrastructure for us at @useactively. We made the early design decision to use browsing agents instead of buying structured datasets and it's paid off tremendously — and @p0 does it best :) Very excited for the partnership!

Thank you @BainCapVC for the feature on Outlier Briefings. For the first time, with AI agents, software can do real work — and every GTM team in the future will look fundamentally different (and much better!) as a result.

It's been so much fun building @useactively with @ajay_bcv — hear the story below 👇

(Fun fact: Ajay and I both went to the same high school in Pittsburgh... at least a couple years apart though 😉)
