Going to start a 2027 Chicago budget thread. Lots of numbers flying around. First: how did 2025 end up? The city ended the year with a surplus thanks to strong revenues and some underspending on programs the mayor has lauded: chicagotribune.com/2026/07/01/chi…

New from @drewjayadams and me: a candidate for Chicago mayor accidentally made registered voters' personal data available on his campaign website, effectively doxing 1.5 million city voters.
The issue has since been fixed — after we informed the campaign.

Tax-increment financing is opaque and complicated, arguably by design. So last year, we had an idea: what if we could show the actual impact of TIFs on all of our tax bills?
Today, we've published the result:

I’m interested to see whether there’s tighter restrictions on 1. property tax breaks and 2. how data centers are assessed. Though developers spend hundreds of millions outfitting them, they often want to be treated (for tax purposes) like fancy warehouses: chicagotribune.com/2026/08/23/spe…

Treasurer's office estimate last week was that CPS was actually still owed $70-$80M (chicagotribune.com/2026/07/15/cps…). Districts have had to do their own math because distribution reports that say which tax year money is coming from/what's left are still held up: chicagotribune.com/2026/02/09/lib…
NEW: CPS financial woes might be $250 million worse than initially thought, thanks to problems with Cook County. A CPS spokesperson says the County shorted the school district by a quarter billion of what it was owed from this year's first installment property tax disbursements. The Cook Co. Treasurer's Office says its due to a "collection adjustment...due to ongoing defects in the Tyler Technologies system." This comes as the current installment will be mailed out 2 months late.
