Here is a link to the draft of my paper (a literature review) on using digital trace data in Russian studies (incl studies of the war). I'd be grateful for feedback; please do send me links to the papers that I haven't included: osf.io/preprints/soca…

We've got two lectureships advertised in Exeter, one in sociology of science (someone working on AI/Data and Society would be perfect) and the other in Philosophy of Science: shorturl.at/gzKV1 and shorturl.at/eGN05

Today I was preparing for a class and noticed a sharp notch on the curve for global life expectancy in the late 1950s - early 1960s, about twice the size of the Covid decrease. I couldn't immediate think of a reason for it so had to google (1/2)

That was the Great Chinese Famine of 1959-61, with an estimated death toll of between 15 and 55 million people. It was the first time I'd heard about it, and I'm sure I wasn't the only one who didn't know. Just shows how little we really know about China and Chinese history (2/2)

A lot of people in my feed seem to be moving to another platform. I'm a bit behind with this, so if someone could give me a link (and an invite) this would be greatly appreciated

I'm writing my first Python script with pandas after having been an R user for 15 years. A long forgotten feeling of learning a new language when you kind of know what you're doing but keep making syntax errors all the time. Though with ChatGPT learning is much faster now

I'm preparing a new course on social problems for first year undergrads and need two readings that present and comment on the recent trends in alcohol and drug use and in suicide. Any advice?

Excellent research from @meduza_en, @mediazona_en and @hippopedoid estimating the total number of Russian fatalities (up to May 2023) at about 50,000, using two independent data sources and estimation methods. Very careful work with the data
In a new joint investigation with @mediazona_en and statistician Dmitry Kobak, we use previously unstudied inheritance records to estimate the number of all Russian soldiers killed so far in Ukraine: roughly 47,000 men.

A reminder that selection is a key factor for explaining the life course outcomes of immigrants and their children.

Anyone has got any experience of using LinkedIn API/data for research purposes? It looks like the API is limited, but there are external services that scraped the data and sell them (and claim it's all legal). What's the common research practice?

My paper on ethnic inequalities in Russian military fatalities in Ukraine is now out in Demographic Research
Men from impoverished Siberian & Far East regions are more represented among Russian military fatalities in Ukraine. Buryats & Tuvans from Eastern Siberia bear a significant casualty burden. See the new paper by @abessudnv #Russia #Ukraine

Yesterday, news emerged celebrating England's impressive performance in PIRLS, an international reading test for primary school children. Here is a link to the excellent report by the Oxford Uni Centre for Educational Assessment - assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/upl… (1/8)

'BAME' (Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic) is perhaps the starkest example, as it's such a broad category that it's hard to think of situations where it could be useful. (7/8)
