Train a robot only on red objects, then show it the same objects in blue. It may have memorized the color as part of their identity.

Carolina Parada explains why robot training needs variety, even when the task stays the same.

A humanoid loading a metal part onto a fixture has a demanding competitor: the industrial robot already doing that job.

The humanoid may be able to walk between stations and perform several different tasks. But manufacturers also need to know how accurately it places the part, es, and whether it can repeat that performance throughout a shift.

ABB’s Andie Zhang gets specific about those comparisons on Automated with Brian Heater. In the demonstrations she describes, humanoids move more slowly and place parts less precisely than industrial robots.

That leaves a substantial challenge for developers. A broader range of capabilities has to deliver enough value to justify the tradeoffs on each task. Moving between stations could be useful in one application, while a robot that stays in place and loads the same fixture all day may serve another better.

There’s plenty of room to explore humanoid applications. For fixture loading, the comparison starts with equipment manufacturers already know, use, and measure.
