I know I probably come across as that annoying dude on everyone fyp 😂😂😭, but I’m really just trying to be consistent and call things fairly. I don’t mind criticism of One Piece, I just hate when people push narratives that aren’t true.
Anyways here are my top 9 anime/manga and games (Ff7 is my top 10)
You can cook me for my taste 😭

Regardless of all the powerscaling nonsense going on, oda replacing joy boy sword and shield with zoro and sanji is one of the best thematic choices in one piece their determination and compassion reflect the two sides of lufy character, making their roles beside han just strength.

I never said sanji was better written because he had more development. You went from A to F and treated that as my entire argument.
I understand what your image is saying about lffy, his established principles and consistency are part of what makes his character work, while he still grows as a captain. I’m not disputing that. But explaining why that approach works doesn’t establish why his writing is better than sanji.
My argument starts with how sanji is established in baratie. His relationship with zeff gives meaning to his attitude toward food, his principles, and his willingness to sacrifice himself. It also introduces a conflict, he feels so indebted to someone who saved him that he’s willing to put his own dream aside. His compassion is a strength, but his willingness to neglect his own happiness complicates it.
Whole Cake Island builds on that foundation by recontextualizing the character we already know. His childhood gives additional weight to his kindness and his struggle with self worth. The compassion his father treats as a weakness becomes one of his defining characteristics strengths, yet escaping that family doesn’t mean he has completely escaped the way they made him see himself.
His decision to leave the crew brings those tensions together.
It shows his determination to protect the people he loves, while also showing how readily he makes his own happiness expendable. The threats against his loved ones are real, but the way he responds fits a pattern established throughout his story: he’s willing to bear the suffering himself if it means everyone else can be safe.
The distinction matters, he doesn’t have to want to die to treat his own life as an acceptable price for someone else happiness. He can want a future and still be prepared to surrender it. That tension between what he wants for himself and what he allows himself to have is part of what makes his character compelling.
Sanji is a man who gives love but struggles to extend that same love to himself. His relationships with zeff, his biological family, and the SH explore different sides of that struggle. Accepting that others love him and learning to value himself are connected, but they aren’t identical. That’s why I read the Elbaf material as adding to this conflict: recognizing his lack of self love gives further meaning to the pattern of putting himself in harm way for others.
This goes beyond counting how many times he changes. It’s about how his backstory, choices, relationships, and themes build on each other. His kindness creates some of his most admirable moments, while his lack of selfworth complicates how he acts on it. The story gets both strength and conflict out of the same established traits.
Like luffy and his freedom is compelling. But I find sanji struggle to grant himself the care and happiness he gives others more emotionally layered. That’s a comparison of how their characterization and themes are executed, not an assumption that more development automatically means better writing.
Luffy is still my favorite, but right now I think sanji is better written overall.

Character writing isnt just limited to development
Main theme, dynamics, parallels, depth, journey, themes, world view, self view, characterization, consistency, highest peak, peaks, impact, symbolism
Luffy clears rest of the op cast in those areas so bad its not even close.

You zoro and sanji niggas always looping yall asses back into the top tiers convo whenever these characters get a feat, and it’s deadass the corniest shit ever
I don’t think neither Loki or luffy can beat sanji in a 1v1 currently
He’s too fast for Loki to perceive and too durable for luffy to bypass(who wasn’t able to bypass warcry dura hax)

I still have luffy over sanji as my favorite, but sanji writing is so clear of luffy. I expect luffy to get more development in the future, but for now, Sanji is the best written Straw Hat. #ONEPIECE1197

Can yall stop acting like a rtrd on purpose? This gimmick is getting old.
Zoro and Sanji fans are too clueless
Oda basically turned them into Luffy’s servants yet they somehow act like Oda loves these characters
Their only purpose in the story is now to wank Luffy
