of all the beautiful salmon, the most remarkable is the jack. this one stays in the river when all its brothers and sisters travel out to sea to feed for a few years. when the big ones come back to their home rivers, he is right there, waiting for them. because rivers don’t have nearly the food that the ocean does, jack is just a handful in size, whereas the ocean goers grow to huge size, sometimes even more than fifty pounds. poor jack gets pushed around and very rarely passes on the genes.

even less often than a blue moon, jack comes to rescue. perhaps there is a landslide that blocks the rivers’ mouth. perhaps there is a calamity at sea, and no one returns.

at times like these, when the same old same old has petered out; the jacks get together with each other. they have all the same genetics as their mighty cousins, even though they are no larger than a trout. the reason they are jacks is because they stayed in the river when everyone else left. and they breed like there is no tomorrow.

their offspring grow back into the huge chinooks. the run continues. the sub species saved.

from just looking at one, it would be impossible to know why the jacks stayed behind; what unplanned misadventures might befall the sea run hordes; and how important jacks really are.
i wonder if all these polygenic neurodivergence traits are ancestral population-level controls for responding to stressful and changing environments

i'm imagining that fairly coarse-grained neuromodulation genes that are vulnerable to disruption could be a basis for this. i don't know what i'm talking about though. i have to check the research.

“The Transition”: the period of time during which the global economy and social structure will be reinvented as a result of SI. 2027-2032. it will be rough.

Having thought about UBI for the past few years and watching what AI is doing to the economy:

I think a reinvented jobs programs should be primary source of income rather than getting a majority of income from UBI. You get an identity, social group, and responsiblity with a job. These ways of organizing a life and finding vocation aren't replaced with UBI.

I imagine hiring mission driven orgs could compete for grants to beautify, educate, build, and inquire.

These missions could be as simple could be as simple as cleaning the streets, but they could also be for maintain different culutures--like craft, building or manufactuing cultures, or music and the arts, or scientific inquiry that serves simple human curiousity.

It would need a feedback system to work well and it probably makes sense to have grants from the level of the neighborhood all the way up to the national level.

If we get UBI, the predictable alternative seems like commerical competition for the marginal dollars at scale. This would amount to klarna burrios and algorithmic circuses.

The big question for this transitional era is: how will people respond when their consequential economic participation in society has ended and what comes next?

Honestly, spot on response.

Just got a phishing email that Gmail authenticated as Google. DKIM/DMARC passed. I can see a lot of people falling for this one, since it plays to the idea that your account has already been compromised.

Scammer puts the scam in an app-password name, triggers a real Google e alert email to your email address.

How this attack works, and why it’s convincing:

1. The trick: The attacker puts the threatening text and shortened URL into an app password’s customizable name on another account. Google incorporates that text into a real security notification and signs the email.

2. The delivery: That notification is forwarded through another mailbox to the victim. In this message, Gmail still recorded passing Google DKIM and DMARC authentication.

3. What makes it convincing: The Google sender, signature, branding, and “Check activity” button are legitimate. The suspected attacker-supplied text appears inside the same trusted-looking template, using a deadline to push you toward its separate link.

4. The giveaway: Both the notification and its genuine Google button refer to someone else’s account. The “permanent access after 24 hours” claim is false; app passwords can be revoked.

Be careful out there folks!

Machines are tools, not persons. Today, some propose granting these systems rights, or even legal personhood. Such an approach risks obscuring human responsibility and leaving those who suffer harm to confront a faceless entity.

i really like rouge like ascii/terminal art style interfaces

like pixel art it becomes more symbolic of the thing but can still be highly evocative of stylized form

it lives between the logical-digital and the spatial-aesthetic
