An 8-year-old girl in Alpena Township, Michigan was in her own backyard looking for mushrooms when a man came out of the woods, put a hand over her mouth and started dragging her 3-year-old brother stopped it with a slingshot his mother had bought him for $3.
Owen Burns was inside playing video games on the afternoon of May 10, 2023. He heard his sister scream and assumed she was messing about with her friends. Then he looked out the window.
He grabbed the slingshot and the first 2 things next to it, a green marble and a piece of gravel, and fired both. One hit the man in the chest. One hit him in the head.
He let go. The girl got free and ran inside crying and told her brother she had nearly been k*lled. Owen went out the door after the man, shouting, and the man ran.
Troopers found a 17-year-old hiding near a gas station a short distance away. He had obvious injuries from being hit with a slingshot.
Michigan State Police said those marks were part of how they identified him, and that while detectives were interviewing him the lump on his head kept getting bigger.
He was charged as an adult with attempted kidn*pping and child enticement, attempted a**ault to do great bodily harm less than m*rder, and a**ault and battery. Bond was set at $150,000.
Owen’s father said his son had been shooting Nerf guns and BB guns since he was small and had always been a good shot. Owen got his first slingshot at about 7.
State police called what he did extraordinary and said he probably saved his sister’s life.
Owen said he was just lucky, and that the man was an easy target because he was a lot bigger than a Pepsi can.
Her 8th birthday was that Saturday. Their mother said she was glad they got to celebrate it rather than hold a funeral.
